NOTE: THIS LOT INCLUDES TWO PIECES, COMPANION ITEM LISTED BELOW.
WINSLOW HOMER (MA/ME/UK, 1836-1910) LETTER, FRAMED
A 1906 letter to his framer (in Boston) regarding a frame for his 'Shepherdess' painting of 1878. Three pages, framed under three window mat, in 17" x 27" water gilt bullnose frame by Guido, under UV plexiglas.
The transcript: "Kenwood (?), Maine, Dec. 8th, 1906. Mr. William Clausen, Dear Sir, I received your check on Saturday night. In regard to some other picture, I will find you something that has been a favorite of mine since 1877, when I commenced it & in 1878 or 9. It was in the Academy exhibition. Enclosed WH (monogram) sketch. Please make me a frame for this, a very strong frame in color & heavy moulding as the shaddows (sic) are quite dark, and they are today so as I do not care to overpaint the whole picture. Have the frame ready in two weeks. Size of canvas 24 x 28 1/4. Yours Sincerely, Winslow Homer."

Sir George Clausen ''The Shepherd
Sir George Clausen ''The Shepherd Boy: Sunrise''oil painting on canvas. Canvas: 28.25''H x 36.25''W; Frame: 35.25''H x 43.25''W. Signed lower right ''G Clausen''; signed and titled verso ''The Shepherd Boy: Sunrise G. Clausen''. Sir George Clausen (British 1852-1944). Professor Anna Gruetzner Robins offers her opinion on this work: ''I have not seen this picture. However in my opinion this is the picture that Clausen Exibited as The Shephard Boy Sunrise at the summer exhibition of the Royal Academy London in 1920 catalogue no. 3. Photographs inclusing a detail of the signature 'G. Clausen' bottom right an inspcription on the back of the canvas: 'The Shepherd Boy Sunrise G. Clausen' and a label from G. Roberson 99 Long Acre inscribed 'George Clausen RA[?] 61 Carlton Hill [ This was Clausen's address from 1905 ] enabled me to form this opinion. In addition the figure of the shepherd boy closely resembles the figure who wears a similar red neck scarf in an earlier picture by Clausen The Man and the Boy 1908 Bradford Art Galleries and Museums. However it is likely that the Shepherd Boy Sunrise was painted around 1920. The Times referring to it and three other landscapes by Clausen commented that Clausen 'keeps to his old way but his landscapes are not the less fresh for that ' and moreover the broadly applied strokes of colour on the gate posts and the treatment of the foliage compares to paintings of a later date such Sunrise in September 1924 Ferens Art Gallery Hull.'' Our thanks to Professor Anna Gruetzner Robins for her assistance in cataloging and authenticating this work.

Sir George Clausen (1852-1944)
Sir George Clausen (1852-1944) oil on canvasboard Roses and cornflowers in a glass vase signed 12 x 11.5in. Estimate ?2 000-3 000 Provenance: Given by the artist on the occasion of the marriage of Richard Clausen and Nancy Kent and thence by descent Some slight scuff marks notably at the top between 12 and 1 where a white trail shows of scratching which is in the varnish but does not appear to go far into the paint otherwise looks a little dirty but may well have been cleaned once or twice before as canvas texture is showing quite prominantly through the paint and the paint is now starting to look a little flat no inscriptions of labels verso in an Edwardian type slim gilt frame. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear imperfections or the effects of aging.
