  FINE ITALIAN SIENNA MARBLE AND PORPHYRY SARCOPHAGUS FORM TOMB OF AGRIPPA, ROMEThe top opening to a welled interior. 9 1/2 x 10 1/8 x 5 1/4 in. Note: Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa (62/64 BC - 12 BC), was a Roman general, statesman and architect. He was responsible for building some of the most notable buildings in Rome. Agrippa assisted Augustus in making Rome a "city of marble', he built the original Pantheon, where his tomb resides today. He renovated aqueducts and was responsible for the creation of many baths, porticos and gardens. Agrippa was instrumental in winning many military victories, most notably at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, against the forces of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra. Condition In good overall condition, the marble is heavily veined. One well repaired paw foot with an age split in the base of the tomb. The porphyry base with a few old cracks, and old repairs to two corners. Size 7.25"H (Large)Marcus Antonius (83 - 30 B.C.) was a skilled soldier and co-ruler of Rome with Caesar's nephew Octavian from 43 to 32 B.C. Cleopatra (68 - 30 B.C.) well known for her charm and beauty, was Queen of Egypt and an ally and lover of Julius Caesar. In 41 BC, Anthony and Cleopatra met and fell in love, marrying in 37 B.C. Anthony gave Cleopatra and their children a share of his Roman Provinces in 34 B.C. a move which enrage Octavian, who waged war on the couple, pursuing them in their defeat to Alexandria. Antony, hearing a false rumor of Cleopatra's death, stabbed himself in grief. He was carried to her and died in her arms. In turn, Cleopatra committed suicide by placing an asp on her chest, apparently from fear of Octavian.
