ITALIAN MARBLE FIGURE: YOUNG COLUMBUS, MONTEVERDEAn Italian life-size carved Carrara marble figure: Young Columbus Giulio Monteverde (Italian, 1837-1917) circa 1871 Modeled seated on quay side pillar, inscribed GIULIO MONTEVERDE ROMA, raised on a carved walnut pedestal. height overall 82in (208.5cm); height of marble 57 1/2in (146cm); height of pedestal 24 1/2in (62cm)Other Notes: Monteverde achieved great success with a series of sculptures on the theme of the genius as youth, capturing his subjects in the moment of their realization of their destiny. Young Columbus was modelled in 1870 and received a gold medal at the 1870 Parma exhibition, resulting in the purchase of a full-size marble version by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the same size as the figure offered here.
