PAIR OF ROMAN GLASS VESSELS, AUBERGINE & BLUE**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, Eastern Mediterranean, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pleasing pair of glass vessels: an aubergine-hued unguentarium and cornflower blue bottle. Alternatively, the bottle presents an elongated body with 4 concave sides, a sloped shoulder, a tubular neck encircled by a slender band of trailing, and a rolled rim. Both vessels boast layers of weathering film that make their translucent walls appear opaque as well as dazzling areas of rainbow and indigo iridescence! Size of larger (blue bottle): 1.1" Diameter x 3.7" H (2.8 cm x 9.4 cm)
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Leonard Wasserman collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, acquired from the 1970s to 1980s

#178290
Condition:
Both are intact and excellent with nice weathering film and pretty iridescence. Blue bottle has a pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
