An American Rococo Coin Silver
An American Rococo Coin Silver Presentation Pitcher James Conning wc. Mobile 1840-1872 marked "J. Conning Mobile" c. 1850 inscribed "Haym to Rosalie" under spout floral and scroll repoussé cartouche engraved with sailboat distinctive grape and grapeleaf feet height 12 in. weight 30 troy ozs. Note: The presentation inscription "Haym to Rosalie" indicates a gift from Haym Moses Salomon (1785-1858) to his daughter-in-law Rosalie Alice Levy probably at the time of her marriage to his son David in 1849. Three of Salomon's sons lived in Mobile in the 1840s and 1850s. David Salomon was a prominent wholesale grocer cotton factor and business executive. Haym Moses Salomon was the youngest son of the renowned American patriot Haym Salomon (1740-1785) the financier for George Washington's army. For an interesting discussion of Haym Salomon's critical importance to the American Revolution see Amler Jane Francis. Haym Solomon: Patroit Banker of the American Revolution. New York: The Rosen Publishing Group 2004. A similar Conning pitcher is in the collection of the Historic Mobile Preservation Society. Reference.
