Newcomb College Pottery
Newcomb College Pottery High-Glaze Vase, decorated by Maria Levering Benson, 1907, and bearing the potter's mark of Joseph Fortune Meyer, featuring an elaborate incised carved floral design of spent white long-stem roses on a midnight blue ground, h. 5-3/4". Miss Benson was invited to take charge of a department in the National Arts and Crafts School in Washington, D.C. in 1908. Examples of her work were shown at the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. This lot is accompanied by a framed photograph, contemporaneous with the vase, of Miss Benson (right) and her sister.
