"LET US NOW PRAISE FAMOUS MEN", SIGNED COPELAND James Agee, author (American 1909-1955), Walker Evans, photographer (American 1903-1975), "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men", published by Three Tenant Families: Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1941, first edition, inscribed on free end paper, octavo, hardcover book, black board cover with silver lettering to spine, with dust jacket. Note: Ink inscription reading "For Stuart, in friendship, Aaron" (Copeland). This work inspired the composer Aaron Copland's 1954 opera "The Tender Land". Provenance: Bauman Rare Books, New York. JOHN FABIAN CARLSON WINTER LANDSCAPE PAINTING New York, Colorado, Sweden,1875-1945 Tonalist depiction of a snow covered meadow with dried tall grass peeking through melted patches and bare trees reaching towards the sky. Carlson studied at the Buffalo Albright Art School under Lucius Hitchcock before enrolling at the Art Students League in New York under Frank Vincent DuMond and Birge Harrison. Later on he become involved in the Arts and Crafts Movement at Woodstock as part of the Byrdcliffe Colony and eventually had his first one man show in New York City. Beside his school affiliations, Carlson also helped found the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado springs and opened the John F Carlson School of Landscape Painting in Woodstock, New York.
