GREEK FIKELLURAWARE TREFOIL
GREEK FIKELLURAWARE TREFOIL OINOCHOE, EX-ROYAL ATHENAEastern Greece, Rhodes or Asia Minor, Archaic Period, ca. 6th century BCE. An elegantly constructed ceramic trefoil oinochoe with radiating crescent bands painted in an earthy burnt orange pigment on a peach-colored background in three registers around the body and a Greek key around the neck. A thick band of the same pigment covers the mouth of the vessel, which has fired in some places to a shiny black. The vessel stands on a wide, disc-shaped foot and has a widening body and curved shoulder below the short, cylindrical neck and trefoil mouth. A thin handle rises high above the flared rim and connects to the shoulder. This is a beautiful example of Fikellura ware, first found in Rhodes, but made at the site of Miletus on the coast of Asia Minor. Size: 5.45" W x 7.55" H (13.8 cm x 19.2 cm)
Fikellura ware has been found in Rhodes, Miletus, Histria, and Samos, and analysis of the clay suggests that it was manufactured in Miletus, one of the most important East Greek cities of the Archaic period. Vessels like this one were traded far and wide throughout the eastern Mediterranean. The archaeological discovery of shipwrecks with their contents intact, including some containing thousands of pieces of Archaic pottery, suggests that this oinochoe could have been a trade item available to a wider range of people in ancient society - a functional item rather than just a prestigious one. Its survival today allows us to understand the ancient economy and appreciate the beauty of even utilitarian objects for the ancients.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
Provenance: private Superior, Colorado, USA collection; ex-private Alabama, USA collection; ex-Roy Green collection; ex-Royal-Athena Gallery, New York, New York, USA, acquired March 10, 2008; ex-private French collection

LARGE CORINTHIAN SKYPHOS ANIMAL
LARGE CORINTHIAN SKYPHOS ANIMAL FRIEZE, TL TESTEDAncient Greece, Corinth, ca. 6th to 5th century CE. A wheel-thrown skyphos of sizable form with a flared discoid foot, an inverted bell-shaped body with swelling walls, and a thin rim adorned with a pair of parabolic handles. Painted with black and red pigments, the cream-hued exterior ground is decorated with a wide register of highly stylized zoomorphs that includes a goat with curved horns and a bowed head between a pair of prowling panthers as well as a bird - perhaps a dove - on the verso. The creatures' features are first created by applying the colorful pigment and then incising certain accentuating details like the panthers' eyes, the bird's feathers, and the goat's segmented horns. Additional floral motifs fill the spaces between the animals, with bands above and below, a band of wavy lines along the upper body, and slender rays encircling the lower body. The basin interior is covered with a layer of dark brown pigment that contrasts nicely with the soft yellow-white body. Size (including handles): 9.75" W x 4.75" H (24.8 cm x 12.1 cm)
The Corinthian style evolved from the earlier Geometric style. Surfaces were traditionally organized into horizontal bands, with an emphasis on repeated patterns, as well as an attractive play between light and dark. The Corinthian potters elected to expand the bands encircling the vessels, and fill them with both abstract, non-figural design motifs and zoomorphic images. On occasion they also included anthropomorphic motifs.
A very similar example hammered for 2,550 GBP ($3,117) at Bonhams, London, New Bond Street "Antiquities" auction (July 23, 2020, lot 15).
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.

GORGEOUS CYPRIOT POTTERY AMPHORA W/
GORGEOUS CYPRIOT POTTERY AMPHORA W/ PAINTED MOTIFAncient Greece, Cyprus, Late Cypriot III, ca. 1200 to 1050 BCE. A sizeable and gorgeously preserved, wheel-thrown terracotta amphora featuring a discoidal ring foot, a robust globular body, tapered shoulders, a thick curled lip, and a pair of tubular strap handles at its sides. At its conception, the cream-slipped body formed the chromatic ground atop which black and red-orange pigments were applied - now faded to a very pale brown. The upper section of the body displays a repeated target motif, an extremely popular Cypriot symbol during this time. The midsection boasts diagonal crisscrossing lines painted in a light cream hue. A fine example of Cypriot craftsmanship and artistry! Size: 9" W x 9.25" H (22.9 cm x 23.5 cm)
