A gorgeous marble capital of a wall column from the Corinthian order boasting classic trompe l'oeil relief decoration. A sculpted ribbon festoon drapes around 3 sides, suspended on each by a quatrefoil, while pairs of scrolled volutes embellish 2 corners. Additional ribbons gracefully cascade downward from each flower as though the festoons are tied behind them. This playful nature of imitating decoration of one medium with another is a characteristic theme of Roman art and can be seen at other Roman sites such as Ara Pacis Augustae and the wall paintings of Pompeii and Herculaneum. A stunning architectural element from the Ancient Roman Empire and an elegant addition to any home decoration or collection!
