CORNELIS DE VOS (BELGIUM,
CORNELIS DE VOS (BELGIUM, 1584/85-1651), ATTRIBUTED Portrait of Susannah Cock de Vos, later wife of the artist, oil on fine Venetian canvas, laid to masonite, unsigned, a half-length depiction of an elegant young lady wearing a partial ruff collar, her exposed decolletage adorned by a red coral necklace, her grey and pale blue dress trimmed by Belgian lace cuffs, her crossed hands holding a posie of roses. Housed in a modern gilt trimmed ebonized frame with nametag, OS: 29" x 25", SS: 23 1/2" x 19 1/2", minor retouching, revarnished.
The same woman appears in a family portrait "Cornelis de Vos with Wife Susannah Cock de Vos and their Two Eldest Children Magdalena and Jan-Baptist" by Sir Anthony Dyck (1599-1641) who was a family friend. She has become more conservative with a closed and starched ruff collar, pleated cuffs, but she still evidences her love of red coral by her prominent display of a four strand cuff bracelet. This painting was obtained from Hanzel Galleries in Chicago in the early 1970's and was attributed to Cornelis de Vos by Dr. Marguerite Kay of the National Gallery, London.
