4 COTTON & CLOTH BLACK DOLLS & 4 COTTON BALESGrouping of hand made cotton and cloth black / African American dolls and four bales of cotton. 1st grouping - Four African American cloth and cotton handmade dolls including a female with a painted nut head holding a suitcase, a Mammy doll holding a dust bin, a fisherman holding a rod and a small bait bucket, and an old man holding a broom implement. Ranging in height from 9" - 10" H. Early 20th century. 2nd grouping - Four souvenir wired bales of cotton, the two larger bales having tags from Lubbock, TX and Brownfield, TX. Length ranging 3 3/4" to 5". Early to Mid 20th century. Provenance - Greene Museum, Phenix City, AL.
Condition:
1st grouping - Overall very good condition, clothing with some holes and fraying, mainly on Mammy figure. 2nd grouping - very good condition.

TENNESSEE FEDERAL DESK AND BOOKCASEEast Tennessee Federal desk and bookcase or secretary, cherry with poplar secondary wood. Bookcase section with cove molded cornice over a plain frieze and two single paneled doors, flanked by chamfered corners; 3 interior shelves with plate grooves. Diamond inlay at keyhole, molded base. Desk section with fall front, battened top and sides, opening to fitted interor with central plain prospect door, flanked by two vertical document drawers with molded edges, and two drawers over three cubbyholes on each side. Plain writing surface over four graduated drawers and a serpentine skirt, raised on tall flaring french feet. Brass pulls and plates appear original and are stamped with images of cotton bales with triple masted ship in the background, and the caduceus (medical) symbol. Possibly Knox County, Tenn., 1790-1810. Interior of top drawer has MESDA (Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts) label dated 9/12/82 ref. #11604. Condition:
Mid-molding that surrounds the base of the top appears to be a 19th century addition. Replaced lower backboard and lower right rear foot backboard replaced. Old patch to top of desk where drawer lock broke out, old patches around later hinges on fall front. Old, possibly original hinges to top bookcase section doors. Feet facings broken and reattached, but appear original. Some oxidation to brasses. Both sides of lower case have full shrinkage splits; right side has patch repair to split. Bottoms of drawer sides built up.

Along the right side of the note are two women, one of which is holding a set of scales. In the lower left corner of the note is a picture of C.G. Memminger. This note was printed with black ink. There is no design on the back. No. 65436. Marked "Six months after the ratification of a treaty of peace between the Confederate States and the United States, the Confederate States of America will pay Five Dollars to bearer/ Richmond September 2, 1861/ Fundable in Eight per cent stock or bonds of The Confederate States/ Receivable in payment of all dues except export duties/ B. Duncan Richmond" and signed in two places. Measures approximately 2-7/8" x 6-3/4". Good overall condition and has been housed in plastic sheath. Provenance: Private Virginia collector.

1863 CSA LETTER, LONG SWAMP, FLJoshua McGahagin was in the CSA First Florida Reserves and was connected with the Confederate commissary which was located in Long Swamp, FL. He wrote this single page letter June 28th, 1863 to H. L. Hart regarding purchase of cotton bales. Handwritten, excellent condition, with a minor nick on one edge.
