FIRST NATIONS TSEKANI SOLONAS
FIRST NATIONS TSEKANI SOLONAS HAND COLORED PRINT (1988)...**Originally Listed At $500**
Ron Solonas (Tsekani First Nation, b. 1958). "Moonlight Hunt" hand colored print, 1988. Titled, signed, and dated "Moonlight Hunt / Ron Solonas / 8-8-88" in black ink on lower left. Numbered 5/50 in pencil on lower right. A beautiful composition by Tsekani First Nation artist Ron Solanas from the Interior of British Columbia, depicting a goose followed by an eagle, both flying by the light of the crescent moon at the upper right. The composition demonstrates Solanas' focus on line drawings embellished with dramatic colors - in this example, shades of red, black and white. Solanas employs stylistic influences of Northwest Coast Aboriginal art, but adds his own unique twist to his compositions. Size of artwork: 10.5" L x 13.5" W (26.7 cm x 34.3 cm) Size of frame: 17.5" L x 21.5" W (44.4 cm x 54.6 cm)
According to one of the informative biographical entries attached to the verso of this piece, "Ron Solonas is a Canadian Indian. He was born into the Sekani tribe in 1958 at Pouce Coupe, in North Eastern British Columbia. Ron is entirely self taught and has been drawing and painting since he was eight years old. He recalls having his knuckles rapped in school on many occasions, for drawing instead of studying. His simple, beautiful art captures scenes from his childhood memories of pow wow dancers, the magnificent eagles, and the creatures of the forest with which he was so familiar."
Solanas' art has also been published. For example, his drawing of a cougar was used to illustrate the cover of Graeme Gibson's Bedside Book of Beasts, Doubleday Canada.
