Rare Australian Evan Jones mantle clockRare Australian Evan Jones mantle clock surmounted with aboriginal figure throwing boomerang, marked to dial Evan Jones Sydney. Movement number 1304. Case of square shape, with applied brass decoration. Has key, Running at time of inspection. approx 28cm H x 13cm W x 10cm D More Information Evan Jones was one of the great Australian silversmiths. Of his early life it appears not much is known, but he was likely to have arrived in Sydney from England at an early age. He served his apprenticeship under another of Australia's finest silversmiths, Christian Ludwig Quist in the 1860's, on completion of his apprenticeship, Jones took over the premises of Quist's workshop at 15, Hunter Street, Sydney. His output was prolilic and he opened up several branches in Sydney during the 1880's, with the principal workshop being located in Erskine Street in the 1890's. Perhaps one of his more well-known pieces is the gold crown made for King George of Tonga. Evan Jones died in 1917, below is his obituary that was published in the Sydney Daily Telegraph of the 11th May 1917: Alderman Evan Jones, a prominent figure in the municipal life of Sydney died at his home, Bingley, Wudgong Street, Mosman, yesterday morning after a protracted illness. Alderman Jones reached the allotted span on August 31st last year. He arrived in Australia from England whilst a lad and was educated at the Fort Street School. At the age of twelve, he went to work with Messrs. Hardy Brothers, Jewellers, Hunter Street in the city and later was employed by the firm of Hogarth & Erichsen. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to Mr. C.L. Quist from whom he received his training in the jewellery trade. Many valuable trophies remain as monuments to Alderman Jones' skill as a jeweller, among them being a silver mounted waddy which belongs to King Thakambau of Fiji on which, on the surrender of Fiji to the British Crown, was handed over with the kingdom and is now in the Tower of London. Alderman Jones first entered municipal life in 1882 as a representative of Denison. In 1866 he was appointed one of the Commissioners for The Colonial and Indian Exhibition held in London and a year later was appointed to a similar position in connection with the Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition. In 1893 he was Commissioner at the Chicago Fair for Australia...he was also president of the Manufacturing Jewellers Association. In all he sat on the City Council for almost 23 years and several times might have occupied the mayoral chair had he accepted the advice of friends and council to contest the position. It was owing to his exertions that we have a Rotunda in Hyde Park which has been such a distinct benefit to the instrumentalists. He leaves a Widow and six children.

GEORGE BRYANT SIGNED PAYMENT DOCUMENT,GEORGE BRYANT SIGNED PAYMENT DOCUMENT, 1779 Revolutionary War dated original Manuscript Document Signed, "Geo. Bryant," at Philadelphia, PA. George Bryant (1731-1791), Vice President of Pennsylvania (analogous to Lieutenant-Governor) 1777-1779. Payment document signed by him as vice president of Pennsylvania, at the state house later known as Independence Hall. Bryant was born in Dublin, Ireland, and came to Philadelphia in1752. As an active Presbyterian, Bryan in the late 1750s and early 1760s played a role in trying to hold together two factions that had emerged during the Great Awakening. This struggle led him into provincial politics where he fought the proprietors and the strong Quaker faction that sought to make Pennsylvania a royal colony. When the Stamp Act was passed in 1765, Bryan helped resist the oppressive act by joining other Philadelphia merchants in signing the Non-Importation agreement. This action likely contributed to his bankruptcy in 1771. After Pennsylvania adopted a new state constitution in 1776, he became an advocate of the radical unicameral government. In the new government, Bryan served from 1777-1779 as Vice-President of the Supreme Executive Council. In 1779 he was appointed a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania.

JERRY MCKEEHAN (1938-2022) ACRYLIC ONJERRY MCKEEHAN (1938-2022) ACRYLIC ON CANVASJerry McKeehan (1938-2022)Earth Changes (Third quarter of the 20th century)This lot marks the auction debut of Jerry McKeehan's most mature and developed works, direct from his estate. The monumental work is composed of hundreds of singular, confident, near-sculptural brush strokes in long lines interspersed with pointillist applications and wide flat planes of paint. This technique treats the eye to an exuberant abstracted landscape that seems to explore subterranean ideas as well. The painting is signed within the image front side and titled verso. The following is taken from the artist's web site: Jerry McKeehan received his B.A. with honors from Colorado State University in 1962. Shortly thereafter, Hallmark Cards in Kansas City recruited him as a designer, during which time he studied at the Kansas City Art Institute. He also received a grant from Hallmark to study with watercolorist John Pike in New York.In 1966, Jerry left Hallmark to devote all his energies to painting and his work at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and the Kansas City Art Institute. He also served as artist-in-residence for the Missouri Council of the Art.Jerry has had numerous one-man shows and has been represented in national, regional, and European competitions.Canvas measures 36 x 48, frame size 37.5 x 49.5 inches.Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.Provenance: The estate of Kansas City artist Jerry McKeehan (1938-2022)
