Shevis's memoir 'A Writer's Life: More Ups Than Downs,' he describes obtaining these three autographs. He received President Kennedy's autograph while he was staying at Jackson Lake Lodge, Wyoming, on September 25, 1963. The photograph mounted in the book is published in his memoir (pp. 3). He received the Robert Frost autograph while attending a 1961 Bread Loaf Writers' Conference at Middleburg College, Vermont, in 1961 (pp. 7).
