'THE ODE BY ALFRED TENNYSON' , EXHIBITION RIBBON, DATED 1862 machine-woven silk, mounted on a paper backing with applied registration lozenge and embossed crest of the city of Coventry, later framedsilk panel 35.5cm x 9.5cmNote:Tennyson's Ode on the opening of the Exhibition was written at the request of Francis Richard Sanford, organizing secretary for the London International Exhibition, and set to music by William Sterndale Bennett to be sung at the opening ceremony. Charles Newsome registered the ribbon design with the Patent Office on 31 May 1862.

C. 1879 Coventry ''Club'' (English) 50'' highwheel maker unknown to us but its distinctive architecture makes it easily identifiable. This machine has interesting elements including brakes which operate by twisting the handlebars. The saddle linkage is very complex and links to the front with a rubber grommet. Saddle shows wear. Pedals have round (Singer style) rubber blocks fixed frame step. Overall good cond.
