Engraved Powder Horn of Samuel X.
Engraved Powder Horn of Samuel X. Cranston 12'' length Engrailed edge with smooth throat raised ring smooth spout with a lob on the tip. Wood base. Horn engraved with hunters on horse birds house trees and animals. Also engraved: ''Samuel X. Cranston sx Horn. Samuel X. Cranston in unknown. Indeed the ''X'' may not refer to a middle initial as no one so-named was found in Ancestry.com sources. There are numerous references to ''Samuel Cranston'' in the Rhode Island Census 1740-1890 tracts living in Bristol Kent and Newport Counties suggesting multiple persons with the same name. Similarly linked to Rhode Island the name Samuel Cranston appears frequently on the US Revolutionary War Rolls 1775-1783. One noteworthy entry from Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution Vol.4 p.90) lists a ''Sergeant Samuel Cranston in Capt. Thomas Cole's Company Col. Christopher Green's (1st Rhode Island) Battalion; muster roll for July 1779 dated East Greenwich enlisted for three years.'' Condition: Horn has nice patina however it does appear to have been cleaned at one time. One tiny hole about a 1/4'' in size and 1'' from the wood base.
