Colville was a British officer of the Rifle Brigade posted to Québec City 1846-1850 (see Christie's (Canada) Catalogue March 26th1970, Lot No.1). Colville would have been a Lieutenant at this time. Note: General Robertson was Purveyor in Chief of the Crimean War. It is unclear if the Naturalization papers belonged to him or perhaps a son of the same name. Provenance: the estate of Sarah Hunter Hicks Green, formerly of Historic Devon Farm, Nashville, Tennessee. Cruikshank's comment following the Battle of Sinop and subsequent massacre by Russian Imperial forces at the outset of the Crimean War, likely printed late 1853 or early 1854. Inscribed first proof and signed by Cruikshank in the plate, framed with a signed preparatory drawing for the same work; together with an autograph letter from the artist dated December 3, 1875 requesting a copy of W.M. Thackeray's articles on the artist's works published in the Westminster review. The larger frame size: 18" high, 24 3/4" wide. Toning to both, some creasing and staining to letter, staining to etching. Neither examined out of frame. Property from the Estates of Eve & Peter Mancino, Bridgewater, CT.
