Friedrich Schroeder-Sonnenstern
Friedrich Schroeder-Sonnenstern (Lithuanian 1892-1982) "Die Kultur Gater Transport" crayon and pencil on paper signed and dated "1957" lower right titled lower left sight 19 3/4 in. x 28 in. framed. Those works created from solitude and from pure and authentic creative impulses - where the worries of competition acclaim and social promotion do not interfere - are because of these very facts more precious than the productions of professionals. After a certain familiarity with these flourishing of an exalted feverishness lived so fully and so intensely by their authors we cannot avoid the feeling that in relation to these works cultural art in its entirety appears to be the game of a futile society a fallacious parade. Jean Dubuffet (French 1901-1985) In 1945 the French artist Jean Dubuffet traveled to a mental asylum in Switzerland to study the works of art produced by the inmates. The artistic creations of those suffering from mental illness had been observed and written about by psychiatrists for decades most significantly in Hans Prinzhorn's 1922 Artistry of the Mentally Ill. Dubuffet was enthralled by the creativity of the work he saw and believed that he had finally found the spontaneous raw art for which he had been searching -his "art brut" - an art uncontaminated by society tradition or the art market. Though frequently referred to as "the art of the mad" art brut was actually more inclusive encompassing all those on the margins of society - the poor the criminal as well as the mentally ill. Essential to Dubuffet's concept was the idea that these artists untrained and unaware of artistic traditions and techniques created only for themselves; their work was produced for reasons separate from its possible use as a commodity. One such artist was Schroeder-Sonnenstern. One of thirteen children Schroeder-Sonnenstern had a troubled childhood spending time in a facility for juvenile offenders. He had his first of several compulsory stays at a mental institution in 1910 where he was diagnosed with dementia praecox (schizophrenia). It was not until 1930 that he began to draw creating a highly imaginative very personal iconography. Schroeder-Sonnenstern's bizarre compelling compositions verge on the surreal; in fact in 1959 he exhibited at the Exposition Internationale du Surrealisme in Paris. His bright vivid colors smooth lines and fantastical figures combine to create works that are infinitely appealing as is evident in the present lot. Reference: Leo Navratali.
