The famous American magician stands in the middle of a mysterious cave-like scene filled with tiny red imps pushing red spheres down slides and up spiral-shaped ramps. On stage, the effect was known as the Golliwog Ball. At Kellar’s command, a large ball rolled up and down an inclined plank, one end of which rested on the back of a chair. 39 ½ x 29 ½". Borders, central folds and closed tears expertly restored; B+. Scarce.

FRAMED LETTER COL. JOHN CROWELL & GIRARD ENGRAVING1st grouping - Johnson, Frye, & Co. New York engraving of Stephen Girard and a 1785 note for 1917 pounds signed by Stephen Girard. Stephen Girard (1750-1831) was a young Philadelphia philanthropist and slave dealer who acquired considerable land holdings near modern day Phenix City, AL and Columbus, GA. The city of Girard, AL was named after him. In 1923, the cities of Girard and Phenix City were consolidated and retained the name, Phenix City. Engraving of Girard 7 1/4" x 10 1/4" sight, autographed note 3 3/4" x 3 1/4" sight. 2nd grouping - Framed grouping of documents relating to Colonel John Crowell (1780-1846). Crowell was the first and only Territorial Delegate to the 15th Congress. He was first Congressman from the state of Alabama, and President Madison appointed him as the Agent for the Creek Indian Confederacy. He was well known for his race horses. His horse, "John Bascomb," won the "South against the North" race in 1836. The frame documents include an 1843 deed of land to Samuel Benton, deed signed by Crowell, and a December 1846 sale of property from the estate of Colonel John Crowell in Crawford, Russell County, AL. Frame: 28 5/8" x 29 1/4", Sight" 10" x 8" papers. Provenance: The Greene Museum, Phenix City, Alabama.
Condition:
1st grouping - overall very good condition with the autographed note having a stain over part of Girard's signature. Not examined out of the frame. 2nd item - overall very good condition, not examined out of the frame. Part of the Crowell deed is copied for display purposes.

Colonel Ellsworth Commemorative
Colonel Ellsworth Commemorative Pitcher Plus Lot of 4 featuring a molded stoneware pitcher illustrating the shooting of Colonel Elmer Ellsworth the first conspicuous casualty of the Civil War at Alexandria VA made by Millington Astbury and Poulson Trenton NJ ca 1861. A baluster form pitcher with spurred handle molded in relief on one side with a dramatic depiction of Col. Ellsworth who lies dead at the bottom of the stairwell while three soldiers one identified as F.E. Brownell struggle to fight the man who shot Ellsworth in the chest identified as J.W. Jackson / The Traitor on the pitcher. Brownell the soldier shown bayoneting Jackson was credited with killing the traitor and later received the Medal of Honor for his actions. The reverse side is imprinted with the phrase Union and the Constitution and features a molded relief of an American Eagle with snake in beak perched above a fallen Confederate Flag with an American Flag flying at right above a gathering of rifles. Approx. 8 in. at widest point 8.5 in. tall. This is believed to be the first commemorative pitcher made by a U.S. potter. The lot also includes 2 Civil War illustrated covers honoring Ellsworth plus 1 cent token from the Marshall House Tavern where Ellsworth was martyred dated 1859 .75 in. dia. Condition: Stress crack at junction where handle meets the pitcher itself. Illustrated covers have yellowed a bit.
