NORTH DEVON SLIPWARE ARMORIAL HARVEST JUGcirca 1790, globular jug with strap handle, cream slip carved and incised with the crowned Royal Arms within the motto of the Order of the Garter above the motto of the English royal motto, with crowned lion and unicorn supporters below the initials "GR", flanked by stylized roses, the reverse with inscribed drinking poem within heart reserve "When I was in my Native Place/I was a lump Clay, And digged was/out of the Earth and brought from/away. But now I am a Jugg because/by Potter's Art and Skills and now/your servant am became and carry Ale I will/Mr. William Richard.", 12-1/4 x 10 in.

Born Claude William Dukenfield (1880 - 1946), W.C. Fields began his entertainment career at the age of 11 as a juggler. Much later he appeared in the Ziegfeld Follies and then in 1925 began his work in film. With his rasping voice and bulbous nose, he became a very successful satiric comedian. The following quote appears on the base of the jug; " I was in love with a beautiful blonde once. She drove me to drink - 'tis the one thing I'm indebted to her for.'Series: The Celebrity Collection.
