Private John Cumisky 17th
Private John Cumisky 17th Connecticut Vols Killed by Discharge of Own Gun Civil War Archive 11 letters 1 full plate tintype. Renowned for their stand atop Cemetery Hill at the Battle of Gettysburg the 17th Connecticut Infantry had as rich a history of tragedy and triumph as any regiment in the Army of the Potomac. Tragedy and Private John Cumisky of Company I were intimately familiar. A married man from Greenwich Cumisky enlisted in August 1862 and left for Virginia with high expectations. Soon however he discovered the hardships inherent in wartime service. The folks is dieing here very fast he wrote his wife Rosey in Oct. 1862. There is one man died out of our company about 5 minutes ago and our Captain is confined to his bed... Dear Rosey we have hard times the hardest I ever seen. We are very near starved with hunger and cold nights. We do not get half enough to eat and the pork we get we cannot eat for it is stinking and we are all the time to work... making roads and building paths thru the woods and mountains right quick... His reflections echoed the hardships. Having heard that the regiment was preparing to move further south on Jan. 17 he wrote curtly I think we are far enough. The time it is there was fifty men taken out of our regiment and sent to Hope Landing to guard the boats that fetches the forage for the army and to work on the boats to unloading... We are doing extra duty and they say will get 25 cents of extra pay on the day but I am afraid the news is too good be true... On the next day Rosey received a letter from Capt. Albert H. Wilcoxson informing her that her husband had died: No power of mine can possibly convey to you the information as speedily as possible.... The circumstances are there. A few days ago John was sent with a number of other men from the regiment to do some necessary work a few miles from camp... About 2 o??Tclock this afternoon your husband took his rifle remarking to his comrades that he would have a squirrel for dinner. About half an hour after information came to them that he had shot himself which proved to be too true. In going through the woods he must have tripped and fallen discharging the gun at the same time. The ball entered his right leg about 6 inches above the knee on the inside passing through the flesh under the bone and out opposite the knee on the inside passing through the flesh under the bone and out opposite the knee severing in its course the artery from which.... he bled to death in a short time... This understandably small collection includes a following letter from Wilcoxson stating that it would be impossible to remove Cumisky??Ts body which was buried in a rough boards near Aquia Creek. Only one letter in the collection is non-war date (regarding a widow??Ts pension) and there is one letter to Cumisky informing him of the death of his mother. The guy had no luck. The highlight of the collection may be a fabulous half-plate tintype of Cumisky in uniform standing with musket and bayonet. A classic image on its own it takes on added significance considering that Cumisky was killed by perhaps the same gun depicted in the photograph. A desirable collection from a singularly unfortunate Connecticut soldier who died in the service only a few months after his enlistment. Condition: Good condition with expected signs of age.
