ROBERT CAPA (AMERICAN/HUNGARIAN, 1913-1954), ORIGINAL 1944 LIFE PRINT OF D-DAY'S AFTERMATH Being a documentary photograph similar to Capa's "Omaha Beach Secured," in which Americans and their allies stake a no-nonsense claim on Nazi-occupied Europe. The present image is apparently unique as an original period print and is stamped "LIFE Photo by Robert Capa" on the back above a clipped newspaper caption that reads "General view of the Allied beachhead shortly after D-Day, showing shipping inshore, and breakwater made of sunken Liberty ships. D25-1-C-7-120 Capa Pool Photo." Additional stamps present are as follows: "Passed for publication Photo 102 / 23 Oct 1944 Name...G. No 47 SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force) Field Censor"; "Dec 1944"; "Used in LIFE Book / U.S History - Vol. eleven / Page 135" (also in manuscript above); "Purcell Book"; "Winston Churchill War Book / p 449" as well as several indiscernible numbers and letters used by publishers, in double-sided frame.

DAY CALENDAR OF AN OFFICER ON THE
DAY CALENDAR OF AN OFFICER ON THE USS CALIFORNIA AT THE PEAL HARBOR ATTACK 6 ?" x 8 ¾" The USS California, a Tenenessee-class battleship. is not that well known as other vessels attacked one December 7, 1941; but due to her crew, the ship was able two shoot down two enemy planes while on fire. Four crew members would receive the Medal Of Honor. The ship was struck by two torpedoes early in the fight, causing the ship to take on water. A bomb penetrated the forward deck, extending damage to the second deck and spreading fire. The water around the battleship was filled with burning fuel oil. Many abandoned ship into a sea of flames. Commander J.D. Jewell, the owner of this calendar, was the ship's service officer. His prime duty was crew safety. In spite of receiving burns on his face and arms, he coordinated the removal of the injured, as well as administering first aid. He survived the attack. On the last page of the calendar, with his orders stamp, it reads; "J.D.Jewell, Commander (MC), U.S. Navy, ship's service officer". The commander stopped ripping out the days on Wednesday 2 , July. From Thursday 3, July on, all pages are intact, including the day calendar notes for December 7, 1941. The clock is in running condition. A unique piece of military history, linked to a survivor in the thick of the action, on "The Day of Infamy".
