7 IVORY IMMORTALS & LACQUER FRUITSet of 7 Japanese carved ivory immortal netsuke figures with stand, together with 2 carved lacquer fruit halves. 1st grouping - Seven immortal figures are all approximately 2"H and have matching Japanese signatures on back, with paper labels on the bottoms identifying them as Jurojin, Bishamon, Zbisu, Hotei, Daikoku, Benten, and Fukukokuju. All approximately 2"H. Also included is a 9"W hardwood stand. Early 20th century. 2nd grouping - Carved lacquer fruit halves are carved as melons with trailing vines; the interiors each are carved with a landscape scene depicting a lion, pagodas, mountains, and nine immortal style figures. 1/2" H x 4" W x 3-1/4" D. 19th century. By 1903 he was a student and assistant at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (later known as the Central School of Art and Design) in London where William Lethaby was principal and a great influence on him. He then oversaw the design of the new school in Southampton Row from 1905-8. From here he became an architect for London County Council and was involved with many London societies, and as a founding member of the Kelmscott Fellowship, a forerunner to The William Morris Society. His large and varied collection was a reflection of his wide interest in the arts. His archive was purchased by The William Morris Society in 2005.

A Japanese ivory and shibayama style figure of Daikoku early 20th century modelled standing on two bales of rice with a rat by his feet holding a mallet and a sack with stone mother of pearl and abalone inlay two character signature to a mother of pearl seal 3.5in. Estimate ?800-1 200 There are two fine cracks across the top of his hat there is a shallow 7mm x 4mm chip to some of the abalone inlay on his hat there are cracks on each side of the figure running from half way up on his sack down across the left side of his body through the rice bale to the mother of pearl inset seal plaque on the opposing side it runs from below his belly down the right side through the rice bale and to the seal plaque in places it has probably opened up as much as 0.5mm.
