A. JACOBSEN, TUGBOAT "FRED B.
A. JACOBSEN, TUGBOAT "FRED B. DALZELL" O/C(Danish, 1850-1921), signed, dated 1892, 705 Palisade Ave., West Hoboken, NJ. Frame size: 28 3/4" high, 41" wide. Relined. Purchased late 1970s. Provenance: Estate of George E. Ratcliffe, Darien, CT. A review of the Ratcliffe Collection archives has revealed that George Ratcliffe purchased both the “C.P. Raymond” and the “Fred B. Dalzell” (both painted by Antonio Jacobsen in 1892) as a pair in April 1978 from the Post Road Gallery in Larchmont, NY. In 1982 the ”C.P. Raymond” painting was consigned by Ratcliffe to and sold by a prominent marine arts gallery. The “Fred B. Dalzell” painting was mistakenly recorded in a recent estate inventory as the ”C. P. Raymond‚, but is indeed a painting of the “Fred B. Dalzell”. A second very closely related painting of the same vessel by Jacobsen, also dated 1892, was sold at Christie’s New York, September 2012, lot 43, and an image of that painting has been reproduced in various prints.

Auction buying is wholesale and not the same as retail store or retail internet buying. There are no returns based on condition. Our auction items are mostly vintage, mostly from estates, and are not in perfect condition. The items are sold "as is", and we are acting as agents, not as principals. Accordingly, prospective buyers are entirely responsible for determining the physical condition of lots prior to and as a condition to bidding. Bidders are obligated to determine their level of interest in and value of the items based solely on their own review. To assist prospective bidders in this endeavor, we offer in person open-house preview days prior to the auction, and also provide written condition reports in response to emailed requests submitted to condition@woodburyauction.com at least two days prior to the auction. The printed catalog lot information is a best efforts presentation of our opinion, rendered on a time-sensitive schedule, and is provided for guidance only, without legal obligation, and does not constitute a "statement of fact". The absence of condition statements in a lot catalog entry does not mean that the item is in perfect condition or is without defects. Please understand that our duty is to present the items fairly for bidder consideration and that the bidder's duty is to make independent investigation of the condition of items before bidding.

ANATOLE KRASNYANSKY, UKRANIAN /
ANATOLE KRASNYANSKY, UKRANIAN / AMERICAN (B.1930), CEREMONY, 1998, COLOR SERIGRAPH & INK, 11"H X 14 1/2"W (SIGHT), 23 1/2"H X 27"W (FRAME)Anatole Krasnyansky, Ukranian / American, (b.1930) Ceremony, 1998, color serigraph & ink signed lower left and numbered verso 37/150. Biography from the Archives of AskArt: Anatole Krasnyansky (born in 1930; Kiev, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian-American artist who has gained prominence by pioneering a new watercolor technique. Through experimentation, Krasnyansky's introduced paper texture into his creative process and made it a dynamic component of his watercolors, resulting in an expansion of the medium's potential. With this new creative process, Krasnyansky added texture and depth to the watercolor medium and expanded its expressive possibilities to a level usually associated with oil painting. He was born in Kiev, growing up and living during the times when Ukraine was a part of the U.S.S.R. Krasnyansky received master's degrees in fine art and architecture. He was already well known in the U.S.S.R. for his classical themes and keen perspective; however, he found that the freedom of expression that he needed in his artwork could not be found within the strictures of the Soviet Union and moved to the United States in 1975. Since his arrival to the U.S. in 1975, the artist has found important uses for his knowledge of architecture, design and his creative imagination, and he has realized his tremendous potential and achieved virtuosity in several different artistic areas. Bordering on the surreal, Krasnyansky's figures never depart from the recognizable. Altogether new in form, they contain echoes of the artist's Eastern heritage, the cubist ideas of Picasso and Braque and the modernity and energy of American culture... culminating in works of dazzling color and brilliant mastery of perspective and lines, born of years as an architect. Still each and everyone of Krasnyansky's works, since his move to the United States, has formed to his new style of creative imagery. Anatole began working as a scenic artist for ABC and CBS, including the production of two Academy Awards shows. He subsequently became a set designer for Universal Studios (credits including The Blues Brothers and Battlestar Galactica) and the Stage Art Director for the Odyssey Theatre. Krasnyansky has become known worldwide for his surrealist masked figures. Krasnyansky's work has been exhibited at the Dalzell Hatfield Galleries in their exhibition "International Watercolor Masters", along with works from Marc Chagall, Camille Pissarro, and Diego Rivera. Krasnyansky's work has been featured in exhibitions at Stanford University and UCLA and has also been shown in solo exhibitions in Japan and around the United States. color serigraph & ink Dimensions: 11"H x 14 1/2"W (sight), 23 1/2"H x 27"W (frame)
