DAN MASKDAN MASK African
DAN MASKDAN MASK
African (Liberian), Nyor Diaple region, Dan People, Mande, early 20th century, carved wood. Deangle mask of short, round form having medial ridge that flows to the tip of the narrow nose, bisecting the split eyes above a pointed chin with feminine features. This mask relates to a group described in Fischer and Himmelheber's definitive study of Dan art, Die Kunst der Dan in 1976 and in the manner of "The Master Sculpture" Uopie (Liberia, 1890-1950). This mask closely resembles a mask previously contained in the Musée du quai Branly by Uopie showing similar recessed, horizontal eye canals.
8 3/4 x 5 1/4 in. (22.2 x 13.3 cm.)
Private Collection, France;
Ex Iowa Wesleyan University collection;
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. James Schram, Burlington, IA, Nov. 1976;

LIBERIAN DAN MASKDan mask from Liberia with squinting eyes and having a pointed chin; measures approximately 7" tall; please refer to photographs for condition. Dan masks are worn with full costumes covering the body. The masks have different functions. The "deangle" mask, for example, has a shallow, domed forehead with median ridge, slit eyes with a kaolin, painted horizontal strip, and a cowrie shell fiber cap. It becomes the guardian and intermediary of the uncircumcised boy's initiation camp. Carved figures known as "lu me" (wooden people) are rare, and are usually female.
