- Two Continental Silver Spoons of Jewish
Two Continental Silver Spoons of Jewish Interest, the first marked Gdansk, Poland, 1771-1779, by Johann Christoph Wonecker, Jr. (1730-1813; Master 1763), 13 lot (.813) silver, with upturned spaten handle and beveled drop, the reverse with pricked monogram "CS", l. 8-1/4", 1.8 t. oz., the second marked Vilnius, Lithuania, 1899-1908, by Leiba Shmuelovich Gold (1826-1904; Master 1857), 84 zolotnik (.896) silver, with modified "fiddle"-shaped handle, l. 9", 2.57 t. oz. While there is no evidence that Danzig silversmith Johann Christoph Wonecker, Jr. was himself Jewish, it is known that he manufactured ritual articles for Danzig's large Jewish population; see, for instance, an 1801-1805 Torah pointer by him shown at the 1980 exhibit at the Jewish Museum of New York (Gunter Grass, et al., Danzig 1939: Treasures of a Destroyed Community (Detroit: Wayne State University Press, 1980), p. 101 exhibit 90). There is no doubt, however, that Vilnius silversmith Leiba Shmuelovich Gold was Jewish. Born in Seduva (some sources say Ukmerge) in what is now Lithuania and was then in the pale of settlement wherein Jewish craftsmen were allowed to practice their trade. He was apprenticed for three years to Vilnius jeweler I. Kermiola and received his master's certificate on March 31, 1857. He appears in the guild rolls until 1866, taking apprentices and presenting his items for assay (in 1860, for instance, he submitted an annual total of 67.25 pounds of silver for testing), but thereafter was apparently lax in his guild responsibilities. When the Jewish and Christian guilds merged in 1886 (at which time Jewish silversmiths outweighed Gentiles almost 6 to 1), Gold was denied a certificate of trade and severely reprimanded for having practiced so long outside the regulations of the guild. Whatever difficulties he may have had were apparently resolved, for from 1888 he once again appears in the rosters of the guild, taking apprentices and submitting his wares. His shop continued into the 20th century under the direction of his sons Ichko and Moishe Chaim Gold.
