A Pair of Antique Monumental French
A Pair of Antique Monumental French Bronzes of "Diana" and "Apollo" after Émile Louis Picault (French 1833-1915) each inscribed "E. Picault" at base Apollo height 68 1/2 in. width 24 in. depth 12 in.; Diana height 65 1/2 in. width 18 in. depth 17 in. each on a round self-base. Note: These impressive works are a typical amalgam of the emerging style of Art Moderne in the early 20th c. with a revival of the "Second Mannerist" generation of the School of Fontainebleau of the late 16th c. From the long-ago Fontainebleau models Picault takes his dramatically elongated anatomies his scanty draperies and the forms of his martial accoutrements; his Art Moderne influences are more subtle and show up in his stylized faces his simplified coiffures and his daring quasi-nudities. His poses are unusually formal and hieratic and perhaps imply an original commission for a symmetrical pair of niches.
