Portrait of James the Duke of Hamilton Oil on Canvas British a portrait of James the Duke of Hamilton unsigned with identification inscribed u.l. and on verso; 28.75 x 24 in.In addition the lot includes a letter from Dr. Rosalind K. Marshall Assistant Keeper of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery dated 17 May 1996. In the letter Marshall verifies that the painting is indeed of James the 5th Duke of Hamilton. Marshall goes on to say that this painting is a copy of a picture done by Jeremish Davison which resides in a private collection. In the painting the Duke is wearing the ''star and sash of the Order of the Thistle.'' Marshall ends her letter by stating that the original painting was completed in 1723 after he became the Knight of the Thistle. Condition: Relined with craquelure.

CONDITION
Observed in frame. The painting appears very good original condition. No apparent issues to the naked eye. Inspection under UV shows a heavy even layer of varnish but no apparent restoration or repairs.
