An important Afro-American printmaker, in the early 70s, McCluney taught drawing and printmaking for the Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts in Boston. For 17 years McCluney also served as a distinguished and influential Professor in Printmaking at MIT. Following a one-person exhibition at the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists in l973, the museum acquired a collection of McCluney's etchings: McCluney had a long history with the National Center of Afro-American Artists, where as an artist in residence in printmaking, he created his Nine American Masters Series. In addition to MIT, McCluney taught at the University of Mass, The Mass. College of Art and Virginia State College. His etchings are represented in numerous private and public collections.
