WESTERN NC MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE WITH WAGONWESTERN NC MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE WITH WAGON AND FIGURES, H...American School, Western North Carolina, mid 19th century oil on canvas landscape painting from the Asheville, NC region depicting a view of mountains in the background and a rocky cliffside to the left, with a winding road and wagon with cattle team lead by an African American figure in the foreground, a white figure on horseback in the mid-ground, and an African American sheep herder in the background, all under a cloudy blue sky. Signed in lower left "J.J.[illegible]. Sight: 20 1/4" H x 16 7/8" W. Framed: 26 1/8" H x 22 3/4" W. Note: Although the artist's identity remains unknown, due to the Mears family provenance this painting was likely created by a nineteenth-century artist working in the Hudson River School style and active in Western North Carolina. George Augustus Mears was born in 1838 to James Barnes Mears of Tennessee and Margaret Elvira Mears (born Penland) in North Carolina. He had 8 siblings, including Myra E. Wells (born Mears) and Lieut. Samuel Marion Mears. George married Nancy M. Mears (born Roberts) (1844-1916) and had 9 children, including Samuel Parley Mears and Ella Webster (born Mears). In 1885 he constructed the George A. Mears House located at 137 Biltmore Avenue, a two-and-a-half-story brick Queen Anne-style building listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 26, 1979. After serving in the Confederate 16th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry during the Civil War, Mears was an Asheville merchant who was in business between 1870 and 1910 on South Main Street, principally with his Mears Daylight Store, which burned in the 1920s. DON BALKE (B. 1933) "GROUND SQUIRREL"DonDON BALKE (B. 1933) "GROUND SQUIRREL"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Ground Squirrel" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 37c Ground Squirrel Arctic Animals stamp issue of July 2, 2003. The arctic ground squirrel Spermophilus parryii was nicknamed "tsik-tsik" by Alaska's Inupiat Eskimos because of the distinctive call it makes to warn other squirrels of nearby predators, even using different variations to warn of different kinds of predators. It usually feeds around high noon, often stuffing its cheeks full of leaves or seeds (Spermophilus means "lover of seeds") to take back to its den for future snacking. Since summer daylight is continuous and very little tundra vegetation exists to provide cover from predators, the "tsik-tsik" keeps a low profile, traveling with its body pressed closely to the ground in a movement known as "tundra glide." In preparation for fall hibernation, it fattens up on flowers, seeds, mushrooms and berries, nearly doubling its body weight over the summer months. The arctic ground squirrel also stores food in its burrow to ensure that when it awakes from its seven-month nap it has something to eat while waiting for spring plants to grow. During hibernation, its body temperature drops from 98.6? F to an incredibly cold 26.4? F -- the lowest known body temperature of any living mammal! In a feat which continues to mystify modern science, this amazing creature allows the temperature of its body fluids to drop below freezing without crystallizing into ice and causing major tissue damage. During the long winter, this impressive rodent will periodically rouse itself -- briefly raising its body temperature by more than 70? F in just four hours.

A DAVID ANDERSEN SILVER AND PLIQUE AA DAVID ANDERSEN SILVER AND PLIQUE A JOUR ENAMEL VESSELThe Norwegian silver vessel in the form of a Dragestil long boat displays a row of circular openwork Viking warrior shields above a band of meandering foliate motif all sculpted in silver stock and filled with glass enamels of plique a jour (French for 'letting in daylight') that are more delicately colored and beautifully shaded than most examples. This particularly unusual example also differs in that the base is a design of plique a jour openwork displaying red berries among scrolling foliate openwork designs - as opposed to the solid base typically seen on these longboats. The edge of the base foot is stamped with the hallmark of the maker David Andersen and 925 for the silver standard of Sterling.Measures 3.75 x 6.5 x 3 inches.Very good tarnished condition with considerable patina. There are no chips, repairs, losses or areas of heavy wear. Some cells display crazing in the enamel work.Provenance: The collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948) by descent to her son, the present owner. RARE MARIUS HAMMER VIKING WARRIOR PLIQUERARE MARIUS HAMMER VIKING WARRIOR PLIQUE A JOUR SILVERThe large Norwegian silver vessel in the form of a Dragenstil long boat is built by hand in elaborate openwork motifs that, unlike any other example on record, include rows of Viking warrior masks, figural battle axes, shields in high relief with protruding bosses, a band of ocean wave motif, entwined serpents along the keel, and dragon heads among various decorative borders - all sculpted from silver stock and filled with jewel-tone glass enamels creating the look of brilliant stained glass. The technique of plique a jour - French for 'letting in daylight' - creates the intense colors on this larger-than-usual example with elaborate plique a jour stand, rather than a small solid oval pedestal base as is typically the case. The work bears a tag stamped with the maker's hallmark and the silver standard mark of 930s, a higher silver content than that of Sterling.Measures 8.5 x 12.5 x 5 inches.Very good condition. There are no chips, cracks, repairs, losses, or areas of heavy wear. Several cells show crazing of the enamel when back lit.Provenance: The collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948) by descent to her son, the present owner.
