EXHIBITED PHILIP HAHS LANDSCAPE PAINTING, ON THE DELAWA...Philip B. Hahs (PA, 1853-1882) O/C painting, "On the Delaware," 1875. Depicts an artist viewed from behind while sketching a scenic Delaware Water Gap vista in the Appalachian mountains along the Delaware River. To his left is a wooded area from which a canopy of branches reaches across the canvas into the cloudy sky at upper right. Likely set near the border of New Jersey and the artist's home state of Pennsylvania. Signed and dated "Hahs 75," lower left, and inscribed en verso "'On the Delaware' near the Water Gap / Hahs, 75." With New Jersey State Museum and State University of New York, Binghamton, exhibition label affixed to back of frame. Housed in a gilt carved frame with nameplate. Sight: 13 1/2" H x 11 1/2" W. A Pennsylvania land grant on
A Pennsylvania land grant on parchment dated 5-24-1806, granting a property in Tioga County named "Wilmington" to Alexander Baring & others, and signed as Pennsylvania governor by Founding Father and Signer of the Declaration of Independence Thomas McKean (1734-1817). McKean was the delegate to the Second Continental Congress whose note brought his fellow Delaware delegate Caesar Rodney riding back to the Congress, to break the deadlock and swing Delaware's vote for American independence. This document was also signed by the first Deputy Secretary of the Commonwealth, James Trimble (1755-1837), and by Timothy Matlack (1736-1829), another of the Founding Fathers who wrote out the formal copy of the Declaration of Independence.
