Pair of Chinese Painted Wood Diabolical Figures, first half 20th century, each carved as fiendish demons from the Daoist Hell standing on rockwork mounted on a plinth base, each winged figure holding its particular implement of torture and standing in threatening stances, h. 13" and 15-1/4". Of all oriental religions, the Daoists put particular emphasis on the tortures of Hell and in their temples have life-sized statues of demons torturing the damned. These figures would have served a domestic altar.

A JAPANESE PATINATED SPELTER FIGURE OF THE DEMON GOD RA...A JAPANESE PATINATED SPELTER FIGURE OF THE DEMON GOD RAIJIN, MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912), cast as a demonic half man half muscular beast with a horrifying open mouthed roaring expression and bulging eyes before backswept horns and gravity defying wavy hair, partially kneeling with one three clawed hand holding aloft his Taiko thunder drum, detailed with side engraved and chased panels of fierce roaring dragons swirling amongst styled stormy waters, trimmed in bosses and centering a loop handled conforming lid opening to an empty compartment, mounted on a stylized groundwork base and raised on a custom carved hardwood stand. Height: 11 3/4" Width: 6 1/2" Depth: 4"
Condition:
Good condition with some slight rubbed areas of patination, buildup and Raijin figure slightly loose but otherwise no serious discernible issues.
