Early Hanoverian Provincial
Early Hanoverian Provincial Pewter Charger, first half 18th century, by John Duncumb, Wribbenhall, near Bewdley, Worcestershire, of circular form, with concave threaded rim and recessed plateau en suite, the rim impressed with owner's monogram "P/IH", dia. 16-5/8". John Duncumb (ca. 1684-1745) was born into a wealthy landed family in Guilford in Surrey, but as a younger son of a younger son he had no expectation of inheriting the family estates. He was left a small sum in his father's 1690 estate in order to be bound as an apprentice in a suitable trade. He served under the Birmingham pewterer William Wood II, whose daughter he married in 1702. He applied to the London Company of Pewterers for his freedom, but was inexplicably rejected. He nevertheless established his own business in Birmingham and, following its success, opened a larger manufactory in Wribbenhall in 1719. (The "From London" stamp which appears on his wares was a common device among provincial pewterers to indicate that their wares were of equal quality to those produced in the City). Although little known today, Duncumb was one of the earliest successes of the Industrial Revolution. The techniques he perfected for the production of pewter enabled him to produce, according to a surviving account book of 1718-1724, over twenty tons of pewter annually. His goods were popular exports to the American colonies; a similar, slightly larger dish by Duncumb is in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. He was succeeded after his death by his son, Stynt Duncumb, and the firm continued under various hands until 1838.
