Some wear to covers and foxing throughout. Part of a collection of books from Dromoland Castle in today's sale. Provenance: Dromoland Castle, County Clare, Ireland. English School late 18th/early 19th
English School late 18th/early 19th c. "Theseus Deserting Ariadne on the Island of Naxos" oil on canvas unsigned 16 in. x 22 in. in a gessoed and giltwood frame. Provenance: Previously in the Collection of South Florida Art Institute Hollywood c. 1982. Note: This painting spans the cusp of Neoclassicism and Romanticism with its Classical figures from the Greek myth about Ariadne and its Romantic atmospheric painting technique. Ariadne is depicted here in brilliant red as she is in John Vanderlyn's painting of the same myth. She sleeps as Theseus is led by Athena to his ship as ordered to do by Bacchus who wished to take Ariadne for his bride.
