SOUTH AMERICAN MESOSAUR LIZARD
SOUTH AMERICAN MESOSAUR LIZARD FOSSILMesosaurs were pre-dinosaur aquatic reptiles, somewhat resembling crocodiles (but not related), that existed during the Permian period around 280 million years ago. Adults could reach 3' in length, but most fossils found are juveniles such as this one. Their fossils have been found only in Africa and South America, providing proof of continental drift as these two areas were joined in the Permian. They died out just as true dinosaurs first appeared. This specimen is remarkably complete; most are missing the fragile feet and end of tail. This specimen is Mesosaurus brasiliensis, and was found in Brazil around 30 years ago. No restoration or enhancement has been done to it, just careful professional cleaning. Sandstone slab, measures 10 1/2 by 19 inches. See images for more details on condition. This item will need to be shipped by a packing company of your choice.
