DON BALKE (B. 1933)
DON BALKE (B. 1933) "TYRANNOSAURUS"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Dinosaur/Tyrannosaurus" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Tyrannosaurus stamp issued October 1, 1989.
The largest flesh-eating animal that ever lived, the dinosaur tyrannosaurus was a forty-five foot long terror that preyed on its lumbering, plant-eating cousins. Tyrannosaurus stood almost twenty feet high, and had a four-foot head whose mouth was armed with six-inch long, dagger-like teeth. It had ridiculously small front legs, useless except perhaps for grabbing things at close range. Its lengthy tail served as a counterbalance to its great body. Tyrannosaurus was very muscular, especially in the mouth region, where it had massive muscles for biting and chewing. It also had powerful rear legs for support and mobility. Even in its own time, tyrannosaurus was most likely a fairly rare animal, with only one of these monsters hunting every hundred square miles. These creatures survived until late in the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era, about sixty-five million years ago, when for reasons still unknown all the dinosaurs vanished, awesome and horrifying tyrannosaurus among them. But it is easy to imagine tyrannosaurus stalking the lush vegetation of the steaming prehistoric swamp for the great plant-eating dinosaurs who moved slowly through the flora, their comically dwarfed heads working constantly to gulp down enough nourishment to keep their huge bodies going. The plant-eaters developed protection against tyrannosaurus -- some sought refuge in water, some grew suits of armor. Yet few were totally safe from the fierce tyrannosaurus, king of the violent, prehistoric swamp.

LARGE & IMPORTANT FOSSILIZED
LARGE & IMPORTANT FOSSILIZED EDMONTOSAURUS PUBIS BONENorth America, Harding County, South Dakota, Hell Creek Formation, late Cretaceous, ca. 70 to 66.5 million years ago. This is a massive, fossilized pubis bone from the hadrosaur dinosaur Edmontosaurus annectens! The location this bone was found comes from a bed of that is comprised entirely of Edmontosaurus and it is suspected a flood killed a large herd of these dinosaurs, washing the bones downriver where they were scavenged and eventually fossilized. The pubis is 1 of 3 bones that form the pelvis, significant since hadrosaurs are bird-hipped (ornithischian) meaning the hips were oriented with backward facing pubic bones, the two classifications of dinosaurs is based entirely on this bone, making it extremely important when identifying new species! The bone structure is excellent, and the surface has developed a lovely umber brown hue from the fossilization process. Size: 35.5" L x 8" W (90.2 cm x 20.3 cm); 17" H (43.2 cm) on included custom stand.
The impressive size of this bone is in line with the huge body of this type of duck billed (hadrosaurid) dinosaur, who could be nearly 50 feet long and weight over 9 tons! Edmontosaurus means the "lizard of Edmonton" after the capital city of the province where they were first unearthed. These animals were gregarious, living and nesting in groups, and the location that this bone was found further proves this family-herd dynamic. The bone bed it was excavated from is comprised entirely of Edmontosaurus bones from multiple animals. This fossil comes from private land near one of the most famous and fossil-dense find areas known from the Cretaceous period, the Hell Creek Formation, composed of various clays, mudstones, and sandstones. The most complete Edmontosaurus specimen ever found is from this area, alongside other famous dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops.

CHOICE FOSSILIZED CALAMOPLEURUS
CHOICE FOSSILIZED CALAMOPLEURUS BOWFIN FISH IN MATRIXSouth America, Brazil, Ceara, Santana Formation, Lower Cretaceous, ca. 110 million years ago. This large and spectacular Calamopleurus fish fossil displays a rare and exceptional preservation that we scarcely see today in this species! Numerous hours of painstaking professional preparation work were performed to reveal the remarkable anatomy: every tooth, fin and bony armor plate is exposed, and rock was removed from inside the jaws to highlight the array of sizable teeth! The head regions and body exhibit the heavy armor of large scales and bony plates this fish is known for! Calamopleurus is a type of extinct, prehistoric bowfin that lived in swampy waters during the peak days of the dinosaurs in the Cretaceous - their teeth and armor plates made for a formidable predator. Bowfin were famous for their large caudal fin and this too, was carefully exposed to reveal a complete tail! We cannot stress enough how amazing the fish is; the combined natural preservation and skill of the preparator have created an incredible specimen! Size: 33" L (83.8 cm)
After meticulous hours of preparation, there is almost nothing left to improve on this amazing fossil- take a look at the eye lens and teeth- superb preservation and carefully exposed to show off the intimate details! Because the anatomy of this fish is very delicate, fine quality complete specimens of this species are very rare and an example like this is unrivaled. While many Santana fish fossils on the market are replicated using pieces of multiple fish, this example stands out as a rare offering as it is a true, original complete specimen!
Santana fossils are known for not only their extreme diversity, but also for their breath-taking preservation considered by scientists to include the finest examples of fossils in existence. The formation provides an amazing window into the prehistoric world from the Lower Cretaceous, 110 million years ago!

TRICERATOPS HORN SOUTH DAKOTA, USA,
TRICERATOPS HORN
SOUTH DAKOTA, USA, CRETACEOUS PERIOD, 65 MILLION YEARS BP uncovered in the Hell Creek Formation, a brow horn, presented on a bespoke mount37cm longNote:With its three horns and frill-like crest, the Triceratops is amongst the most iconic of all dinosaurs. Studies suggest that the horn served a number of purposes, analysis of puncture marks on several examples have shown that male triceratops often fought with one another, likely to impress females. Defence from predators would also have been critical, a partial Triceratops fossil collected in 1997 had a horn that was bitten off, with tooth marks that matched Tyrannosaurus Rex. The horn had partially grown back, showing that Triceratops had the ability to regenerate.(The Natural History Museum, London)

MADAGASCAR previously fragmented and reassembled, with carved wooden stand(1)egg 44cm high, 76cm circumference at widest / stand 19cm highThe Elephant Bird, Aepyornis maximus, produced the largest egg of any animal that has ever lived, including the dinosaurs. Standing around ten feet tall and weighing half a tonne, the volume of an average Elephant Bird egg is equivalent to 160 modern chicken eggs. Native to Madagascar, the animal lived to well within human memory, only becoming extinct around 1200 AD. Indeed, during his travels to the east Marco Polo wrote of hearing tales from sailors about huge birds, these accounts are likely to describe the Elephant Bird.

SOUTH AMERICAN MESOSAUR LIZARD
SOUTH AMERICAN MESOSAUR LIZARD FOSSILMesosaurs were pre-dinosaur aquatic reptiles, somewhat resembling crocodiles (but not related), that existed during the Permian period around 280 million years ago. Adults could reach 3' in length, but most fossils found are juveniles such as this one. Their fossils have been found only in Africa and South America, providing proof of continental drift as these two areas were joined in the Permian. They died out just as true dinosaurs first appeared. This specimen is remarkably complete; most are missing the fragile feet and end of tail. This specimen is Mesosaurus brasiliensis, and was found in Brazil around 30 years ago. No restoration or enhancement has been done to it, just careful professional cleaning. Sandstone slab, measures 10 1/2 by 19 inches. See images for more details on condition. This item will need to be shipped by a packing company of your choice. We maintain a list of reliable shippers, or you may choose your own.
