A DIRK VAN ERP MICA AND HAMMERED
A DIRK VAN ERP MICA AND HAMMERED COPPER "RIVET" LAMP, S...A DIRK VAN ERP MICA AND HAMMERED COPPER "RIVET" LAMP, SIGNED,1911-1915, the patinated flaring conical shade with a central domed top issuing riveted flat bands enclosing four large mica panels ending on a straight copper rim, raised on a patinated four-light shaped baluster form lamp base riveted with four slightly curved rod arms terminating in flat upturned guards, verso mark with windmill on a boxed "DIRKVANERP," patinated throughout and fitted for electricity. Height: 20 1/2" Diameter: 19 1/4" Note: Dirk Van Erp (Dutch/American 1862-1933) was one of the pre-eminent metalsmiths in the San Francisco - Oakland areas during the Arts & Crafts movement. His belief in quality of workmanship, simplicity of design, and the use of natural materials led to his popularity amidst followers of the Arts & Crafts movement during the early 20th century and is possibly even more so with collectors of today. His lamps were probably the best selling of all his items and the Rivet lamp offered here was one of the most popular. This one has the lampshade's straight rim (used 1910-1915) and the lamp base marked with the windmill on a box enclosing a blank space with effaced name over "DIRKVANERP," was used from 1911-1915. This lamp pattern has sold for as high as $16,500 and considering that other patterns by Dirk Van Erp have sold for over $250,000, this lets the young collector acquire an example of a true master for a much more affordable price. Special thanks to artsncrafts.com for their useful information.
Condition:
Good condition with expected surface buildup, some light scratches, two old shallow dents towards base, and light wear for lamps of this age, use, and materials. Two light sockets have had chain pulls replaced, not original wiring but needs updating, patination on base, and mica shade appears to be old and original. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder. Statements by Simpson Galleries regarding the condition of objects are for guidance only and should not be relied upon as statements of fact and do not constitute a representation, warranty, or assumption of liability by Simpson Galleries. All lots offered are sold "AS IS." NO REFUNDS will be issued based on condition.
