GORGEOUS CYPRIOT POTTERY AMPHORA W/ PAINTED MOTIFAncient Greece, Cyprus, Late Cypriot III, ca. 1200 to 1050 BCE. A sizeable and gorgeously preserved, wheel-thrown terracotta amphora featuring a discoidal ring foot, a robust globular body, tapered shoulders, a thick curled lip, and a pair of tubular strap handles at its sides. At its conception, the cream-slipped body formed the chromatic ground atop which black and red-orange pigments were applied - now faded to a very pale brown. The upper section of the body displays a repeated target motif, an extremely popular Cypriot symbol during this time. The midsection boasts diagonal crisscrossing lines painted in a light cream hue. A fine example of Cypriot craftsmanship and artistry! Size: 9" W x 9.25" H (22.9 cm x 23.5 cm)

EARLY 20TH C. JAPANESE MEIJI NEGORO
EARLY 20TH C. JAPANESE MEIJI NEGORO LACQUERED TRAYSEast Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. early 20th century CE. A lovely pair of Negoro lacquered wood trays, one is a lengthy ovoid form and the other a discoidal shape. The large serving platter has a rim encircling the periphery, and the interior and exterior base are painted black with red lacquer on the inner and exterior of the rim - known as Negoro - and with age and time, the upper layer wears away to reveal the vivid black underneath the red and create a striking, mottled surface. The other circular tray is painted with Negoro lacquer on the exterior, and the interior is black with speckles of red. Negoro is a popular style of lacquerware developed in the Negoro-ji temple during the 14th century, and this technique has ensued for generations because the gradually changing surface colors are beautiful signifiers of age and the durability of the items! Size (large tray): 16" L x 11" W x 1" H (40.6 cm x 27.9 cm x 2.5 cm); (smaller tray): 5.75" Diameter x 1.5" H (14.6 cm x 3.8 cm)

RARE MISSISSIPPIAN SHELL GORGET
RARE MISSISSIPPIAN SHELL GORGET W/ COSMOLOGICAL FIGURES...Native American, Southeastern United States, Eastern Woodland, Mississippian, ca. 200 to 1000 CE. This is a beautiful and rare incised and openwork gorget made from a white shell featuring 2 stylized male figures. The discoidal piece is pierced at the top with two perforations for suspension to use as a pectoral pendant or gorget. The figures are overlapping, their bodies diagonally positioned crossing at the waists, the heads facing each other in profile. Both are dressed in ornate headdresses and jewelry, necklaces, bracelets, and waist cloths with beaded or woven patterns that are likely ceremonial attire. The areas of cut outs accentuate the figures and add symmetry to the nearly identical men. Mississippian shell gorgets are special items for adornment and burial that carried protective powers- the cross in a circle was a sacred cosmological symbol of regeneration and the intersections of the Underworld and Aboveworld. Size: 4.5" L x 0.25" W (11.4 cm x 0.6 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.

HELLENISTIC GREEK ALABASTER
HELLENISTIC GREEK ALABASTER LIDDED PYXIS, EX SOTHEBY'SAncient Near East, Mesopotamia to Eastern Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 5th to 3rd century BCE. This is a beautiful and elegant pyxis vessel hand carved from alabaster with a tiered lid. The body is cylindrical with a flat stable base and a carinated shoulder with a thick raised ring to delineate the shoulder from the body. Boasting creamy hues of grey and tan with natural white striations, the alabaster surface of the ancient vessel has been carefully incised with a lovely series of slender horizontal bands on its sloping shoulder and around its body. The rim of the vessel is broad and a discoidal lid with a raised conical handle that fits flush atop the narrow mouth. Size: 4.1" Diameter x 4.5" H (10.4 cm x 11.4 cm)
The pyxis form, a rounded vessel with small, fitted lid, is found throughout the ancient Near East and the Classical world, and was probably imported to the ancient Levant from Mycenaean Greece. These have been found in burial chambers beneath Tels, the settlement mounds common to this region, often alongside many other vessels - bowls, oil lamps, juglets, and flasks - some made nearby, others imported from Greece and the Greek South Italic colonies. These items remind us of the interconnected trade world of the ancient Mediterranean, and the rich cultural milieu of the past.
For a similar example please see the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art's website, accession number: S2013.2.10a-b.

MISSISSIPPIAN SHELL NECKLACE W/
MISSISSIPPIAN SHELL NECKLACE W/ WOODPECKER GORGETNative American, Southeastern United States, Tennessee, Greene County, Mississippian, ca. 1250 to 1450 CE. A lovely necklace strand comprised of over 100 thick discoidal beads carved from shell, and a central gorget shell pendant incised with Cox style woodpecker heads! The beads are strung in modern times on a wire, the gorget at the center threaded through the hand-drilled suspension holes. The slightly curved face is incised with the cross in circle solar motif and four woodpecker heads around the outer edge. Gorgets signified rank and power, the woodpecker- especially the large ivory-billed woodpecker (recently declared extinct in 2021) was an emblem of power and wealth- their beaks and red feathers used for trade and ornaments. This necklace is displayed in modern Riker case. Size (strand doubled): 17" L (43.2 cm); (gorget pendant): 2" Diameter (5.1 cm); (case): 12.25" L x 8.25" W (31.1 cm x 21 cm)
In an entry for the "Tennessee Encyclopedia" published October 8, 2017, titled "Cox Mound Gorget," C. Andrew Buchne writes: "Cox Mound gorget has three important iconographic elements. In the center is a cross inside a rayed circle or sun motif. The cross is symbolic of the sacred, or council, fire. The sun represents the sky deity and/or mythical ancestors. Surrounding the cross and sun is a scroll-like design element known as the looped square. This feature may represent wind, or possibly the litter on which subordinates carried a chief. Typically the looped square is composed of four lines, but in some cases only three lines are used. Four crested bird heads, which most scholars interpret as woodpeckers, are found on the outer edge. The woodpecker heads always are oriented in a counterclockwise direction, suggestive of the prehistoric Native American swastika."

19TH C. JAPANESE EDO / MEIJI WOOD
19TH C. JAPANESE EDO / MEIJI WOOD SHO KANNON BODHISATTV...East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji Period, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A beautiful wood carving of Sho Kannon the Japanese version of Guanyin or Avalokiteshvara, the sacred Bodhisattva of compassion. Sho Kannon is depicted as either male or female, here, the man version stands barefoot on a three-tiered lotus pedestal. The figure and upper half of the lotus petals are carved separately, and tenoned into the discoidal base via a peg. Lengthy robes cascade in folds down his slender figure and his arms are draped with sashes and the raised hand may have once held a lotus flower, while the other hand forms a mudra gesture. His serene visage displays elegantly arched brows, down-turned eyes beneath heavy lids, a petite nose, pursed lips, and rounded chin. His hair is piled into an ushnisha atop his head, and long ears frame either side of his head, representing his rejection of the material life and earthly pleasures. The surface is lacquered in a dark brown with some wear to pigment that creates a lovely, weathered appearance throughout. Size: 8.5" W x 25" H (21.6 cm x 63.5 cm)
Bodhisattvas are among the most compassionate beings in the universe, devoting themselves to saving the suffering and helping others achieve enlightenment and Buddhahood. Traditionally depicted as less austere than Buddhas with graceful postures and elegant garments, a nod to the riches of the Northwestern Chinese Silk Road, this piece is no exception. Bodhisattvas or Guanyin are associated with compassion and mercy - their long ears significant, because they rescue all human beings by hearing their cries for help and the sounds of suffering.

LARGE CHINESE EASTERN ZHOU BRONZE
LARGE CHINESE EASTERN ZHOU BRONZE DING W/ LIDEast Asia, China, Eastern Zhou Dynasty, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. A stunning and large leaded bronze ritualistic cauldron known as a ding vessel with a matched lid standing on elegant tripodal legs. The "cattle-leg" feet have dragon-like zoomorphic faces known as taoties cast into the top where they meet the spherical body. The basin's exterior is cast with elaborate continuous bands of interlacing spiral patterns known as kui ("snake" or "dragon") and leiwen (a motif of thunder) that encircle the body. The thick, vertical handles with a scrolling pattern, allowed the vessel to be lowered and removed from an open fire and the discoidal lid is slightly domed with the same interlocking motifs and 3 ring handles, useful for removing the lid when the vessel was heated. Dings were ritualistic cauldrons for preparing food during ceremonies to honor ancestors and these ornate vessels were often buried with the deceased. This is an outstanding example! Size: 19" W x 14" H (48.3 cm x 35.6 cm)
For a nearly identical example, please see the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website, accession number: 13.100.6a, b.

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mbagani (Babindji) culture, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A large wood ceremonial mask with characteristic large discoidal eye sockets highlighted in white kaolin with narrow slitted coffee bean shaped eyelids. The domed forehead is capped by a pointed crest, and the chin also comes to a point, creating a sense of balance and symmetry. This mask was probably used in circumcision or society initiation rites and possibly for healing. This is one of the rarer masks from Sub Sahara Africa carved by the Mbagani people, a subgroup of Lulua / Luba culture, and highly influenced by neighboring cultures (Chokwe, Kuba). Traditionally they lived in small chiefdoms subsisting on farming, hunting, and are known for their wood carvings and woven/embroidered textiles, their population is estimated at 35,000. MYCENAEAN SILVER-COPPER FUNERARY
MYCENAEAN SILVER-COPPER FUNERARY MASKETTEGreece, Mycenaean Period, Late Bronze Age II, ca. 1600 to 1000 BCE. A discoidal sheet made from a silver-copper alloy (52.3% silver) stamped with a repoussé and stylized face of a man with curling facial hair around his pointed chin. The heart shaped face has evidence of piercing holes along the upper edge that may have been for suspension. Hammered sheets of precious metals such as gold, silver, and bronze were made into ornaments for sewing to clothing and / or funerary shrouds, and sometimes attached to masks of warriors. This period is so named for the palace at Mycenae, famed in Homeric legend as the opulent seat of King Agamemnon - excavations there revealed an elite and long-lasting society with a great deal of wealth. This extended to the workshops of artisans who produced gorgeous metal items for the living and deceased. Size: 2" L x 1.75" W (5.1 cm x 4.4 cm); silver quality: 52.3%; weight: 3.5 grams
