IVORY COAST BAULE MOUSE ORACLEBaule
IVORY COAST BAULE MOUSE ORACLEBaule Mouse oracle from Ivory Coast with male piper on lid and turtle as the base; measures approximately 17" tall; please refer to photographs for condition; lid is cracked.
Among the Guro, Baule, and Yaure peoples of the Ivory Coast mouse divination is widely used in consultations regarding concerns ranging from serious illness to establishing the time and scale of sacrifices, from personal misfortune to public conflict. Within the container there are upper and lower chambers with a hole between the two. At the time of a consultation, a mouse is placed in the lower chamber. In the upper chamber an inverted tortoise shell or small rectangular metal plate is placed with bits of rice chaff on it. Ten narrow metal strips are attached at one end of the shell or plate lying in a parallel pattern. A lid, placed over the container, is removed after a minute or two and the wunnzueyifwe (diviner) "reads" the rearrangement by the mouse of the metal strips.

RITUALISTIC CHAVIN ANTHRACITE
RITUALISTIC CHAVIN ANTHRACITE DIVINATION MIRRORPre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. An enchanting mirror, carved from a single piece of anthracite stone, featuring a domed verso laterally drilled for suspension, and a flat face that is highly polished. The surface is like glass, silky smooth - the blackness of the anthracite creates an otherworldly softness to the reflection. The process to polish a stone to such a high level of reflectivity so that it retains its mirror qualities after nearly 2000 years is utterly remarkable! Mirrors were prized by the ancients of the Americas and believed to serve as portals to the celestial realm, treasured for their divinatory, healing, as well as decorative properties. Size: 4.75" Diameter x 1" W (12.1 cm x 2.5 cm)

RARE CHAVIN ANTHRACITE BOX - INLAID
RARE CHAVIN ANTHRACITE BOX - INLAID DISCS, ORIG. CORDPre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. An incredibly rare carved anthracite box held together with cotton cords and inlaid with greenstone discs. The panels are all bored through with perforations along the peripheries, the cotton loops are knotted tightly together, and a pair of handles extend from the top. The panels are flush and tightly sealed on all sides, there is no opening unless the cords are cut. All sides are highly polished to a nearly reflective sheen, and five walls are etched with a geometric diamond pattern, greenstone discs inlaid at the center of each. What did this exquisite box contain? The unusual lacing implies it was never intended for utilitarian or everyday use, suggesting this functioned as a funerary container that was sealed once the contents was placed inside. Anthracite is an interesting material, a hard coal that is highly reflective when polished, suitable as mirrors which were highly prized, as they believed mirrors held powers of divination. Size: 5" L x 3" W x 2.6" H (12.7 cm x 7.6 cm x 6.6 cm)

19TH C. COOK ISLANDS WOOD ADZE
19TH C. COOK ISLANDS WOOD ADZE HANDLE (RUATANGAEO)**Originally Listed At $1000**
Oceania, Polynesia, Southern Cook Islands, Mangaia Island, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A beautiful openwork adze handle of distinctly ceremonial form known as a ruatangaeo, hand-carved from dark maroon-hued wood. The tapered rectangular body is elaborately incised with several horizontal layers as well as 2 large chambers surrounded by vertical bars, each with incised triangular decorations to create a consistent pattern across the exterior surfaces. Notably detailed in its presentation, this adze handle marked social distinction and served ceremonial purposes rather than military or utilitarian functions. Size: 4.5" W x 16.9" H (11.4 cm x 42.9 cm); 18.625" H (47.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Ruatangaeo, like this example, are said to have descended from or be related to carved deities. Considered inferior gods or objects of divination, this adze haft were once believed to have the ability to still storms and protect fishermen. The name "rutangaeo" translates to "kingfisher's nests," which adze hafts of this style closely resemble.
According to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, "Adzes were prized not only as tools but as material property of wealth. An adze maker is a ta'unga (expert) who enjoyed a position of social and economic importance. His work is sought after and is paid in food and cloth for his services and he could buy protection with his skills. With a collection of adzes the conquered could buy life and protection from a powerful chief."
Cf. The Museum of New Zealand (Te Papa Tongarewa), registration number FE002306.
