LUCREZIA BORGIA HN2342 - ROYAL
LUCREZIA BORGIA HN2342 - ROYAL DOULTON FIGURINEDesigned by Peggy Davies, each figure in the collection is highly complex and richly decorated. Signed by Peggy Davies.
Throughout time there have been women whose impenetrable qualities have brought them awesome power and unrivaled superiority. The beguiling women of the Les Femmes Fatales collection were each made in a limited edition of 750. ?????? Lucrezia Borgia HN2342 was the daughter of Pope Alexander VI. She is said to have been an ideal Rennaisance beauty, with long blond hair. At 22, Lucrezia had already been divorced, widowed, pregnant out of wedlock and about to enter her third marriage. It is widely believed that the Borgias got rid of Lucrezia's first two husbands when they found them no longer useful in their political schemes. After the death of her father, Lucrezia led a peaceful life with her third husband, and their court supported many artists and philosophers. The Les Femmes Fatales series pays tribute to the legendary beauty of history's most notoriously powerful women. - Les Femmes Fatales Artist: Peggy Davies

RACHEL JACKSON PORTRAIT
RACHEL JACKSON PORTRAIT MINIATURE19th century miniature portrait of Rachel Donelson Jackson (1767-1828), wife of President Andrew Jackson. Mrs. Jackson is depicted in a black dress with white sheer lace collar and bonnet with mantilla. Watercolor on ivory, housed in an oval beaded gilt metal frame (likely later) with gilt mat. Sight - 2 3/8" x 1 3/4". Framed - 3 3/4" x 3". Circa 1830. This lot is accompanied by a 1942 biographical booklet on Rachel Jackson by Nellie Treanor Stokes, published by the Ladies Hermitage Association. Rachel Jackson (1767-1828) moved with her family from Virginia to Tennessee as an adolescent (her father, John Donelson, is recognized as the co-founder of Nashville). Her first marriage ended in a divorce of controversial timing, which led to scandal during her second husband, Andrew Jackson's, presidential campaign. Jackson was elected, but Rachel died of a heart attack shortly before the inauguration. Throughout their marriage, Rachel kept a fairly low profile and spent most of her time in Nashville, running the Jacksons' home, The Hermitage. Partly as a result of that, her sudden death, and a fire at the Hermitage in 1834, very few portraits of her exist. According to the book "Andrew Jackson: A Portrait Study," by James G. Barber, only three life portraits of Rachel are known to have been painted: two oil on canvas portraits (painted in 1825 and 1827, both by Ralph E.W. Earl, both now in the collection of The Hermitage), and one miniature portrait (artist unknown). That miniature is assumed to have been destroyed in the fire. It was referred to in a Jackson letter in 1813, but in 1842, he noted he had no likeness of Rachel or himself from their early years. Only three post-mortem miniatures are mentioned in Barber's book, all based on the 1827 Earl portrait. Jackson commissoned one of them in 1830 from James B. Longacre, but Jackson angrily sent it back to Longacre when he felt it did not convey Rachel's likeness (whereabouts currently unknown). Jackson gave the second miniature portrait (circa 1830-1831), to his granddaughter, Rachel Jackson Lawrence as he lay dying (it is now in the collection of The Hermitage). That miniature is signed by Louisa Catherine Strobel, but for many years was misattributed to Anna Peale. Barber's book states that the third miniature, "now unlocated," was also misattributed to Anna Peale. In 1941, Fanny O. Walton, who acquired it from her cousin John Lawrence (son of Rachel Jackson Lawrence) offered it for sale to the Ladies Hermitage Association. But the LHHA declined to buy it, believing they already had a Peale miniature. (ref. Barber, p. 229). We believe this is that portrait. Provenance: acquired by consignor from the estate of a Jackson family member. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
Condition:
2 cracks, each running the length of the image. Frame is likely not original. Not examined out of frame.

FRIDA KAHLO "AUTORRETRATO" MIXED
FRIDA KAHLO "AUTORRETRATO" MIXED MEDIAFrida Kahlo (Mexico, 1907 - 1954) unframed watercolor, pastel, & charcoal on paper depicting a portrait of Frida Kahlo and titled "Autorretrato", executed in 1941. Measures 18-1/2" in height with width of 12-1/2" & signed to lower left "Frida Kahlo 1941". All measurements are approximate. Complete with certificate of authenticity & letter of provenance, please see photographs. Provenance: comes from the estate of a prominent Texas collector. Magdalena Carmen Frida Calderon (Frida Kahlo) was born on July 6, 1907 in Mexico City, the daughter of a German Jewish father & a Mexican mother. She lived her adult life in the shadow of her husband, famed muralist & Mexican national hero Diego Rivera whom she had known since childhood. They embarked on their violent courtship following his divorce from his second wife. The were both temperamental & noisy Communists, & she proudly proclaimed that she had never been expelled from the communist party, as Diego was. He was obese, unfaithful, & psychologically abusive, yet Frida retaliated with her own bisexual affairs. Kahlo once called Rivera "the other accident" in her life, and she lamented her inability to possess him completely. A grisly accident occurred when she was a teenager: a streetcar hit the bus in which she was riding and drove a handrail into her abdomen and out her vagina. As a result her pregnancies resulted in miscarriages and abortions. Semi-crippled and in constant pain, she required several ghastly operations and enough liquor to make her a probable alcoholic. She was extremely loyal to her country; she altered her birthdate to coincide wth the start of the 1910 Mexican Revolution, and to her politics; at her cremation a hammer and sickle was draped over the casket. She didn't enjoy a long enough career to make it into the coffee-table books while she she was still alive. In 1939, after Kahlo returned to Mexico & after some success with exhibitions of her work in Paris & New York, she & Rivera divorced. Her health deteriorated, yet she continued to paint. She and Rivera remarried in 1940, but her physical condition worsened. After her death she was transformed from the "wife of Diego Rivera" to the art world's version of Sylvia Plath, in many opinions. The resurrection of Kahlo started in the 1970s, when her work began to generate excitement in the women's liberation movement. But there always has been much controversy about the worth of her work. She was hailed by the Surrealists and unabashedly admired by Picasso; yet in Mexico itself there are many who feel she is over-rated. She is the subject of numerous biographies, exhibitions and documentary films, not to mention souvenir T-shirts, calendars and posters. For women and feminists, especially, she is a heroine who overcame great odds to create an identity for herself in art. She died in 1954.

The service may have been ordered for him by his nephew, Hugh Clerk in the East India Company service.
A distant relative was James Rattray, son of Sir Rullion Rattray of Runnygullion, and one of the last to flee the field at Culloden; but he was captured and tried in London, being saved by a mysterious witness at his trial, who swore that he had seen James forcibly handcuffed in the rebel army. After his unexpected acquittal the witness was never seen again, nor did James Rattray ever know his benefactor."

Yonge: "Sir William Yonge, 4th Baronet of Colyton, Devon, was the son of Sir Walter Yonge and great-grandson of Sir John, created a baronet in September 1661. He married firstly Mary, daughter of Samuel Heathcote of Hackney, but from her was divorced and married secondly in 1729 the Hon. Anne Howard, daughter and coheir of Thomas, 6th Lord of Effingham.
This service, characterized by grass green enamel on supporter and crest, clearly acted as the pattern for another made in 1731 when he had inherited the baronetcy. This is one of the two earliest services copied from a bookplate."

BIERSTADT - "STORM IN THE
BIERSTADT - "STORM IN THE ROCKIES, MT. ROSALIE" (1869)**This is an oversized piece that may require special shipping. Please inquire for a quote prior to bidding.
Albert Bierstadt (German-American, 1830-1902). "Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie" chromolithograph by H.M. Long, published by Thomas McLean, London, UK, 1869. Signed & dated 1866 (date for the original painting) in plate. A grand chromolithograph of Albert Bierstadt's "Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie" presenting a landscape inspired by sketches created during an 1863 expedition to the Colorado Rockies capturing Mt. Rosalie (now Mount Evans). The composition features a Native American hunting scene in the foreground, a waterfall leading to a lake (based on the Upper and Lower Chicago Lakes near Denver) in the middle ground, and Mt. Rosalie (now Mt. Evans) amidst threatening storm clouds but spot lit by a magical break in the clouds at the upper left. A grand landscape of the American West that reflects Bierstadt's understanding of Manifest Destiny as well as his audience's appetite for the dramatic sublime and, somewhat paradoxically, nearly photographic details, set in a custom, museum-quality frame behind glass. Size (sight view): 18" L x 32" W (45.7 cm x 81.3 cm) Size (frame): 32.75" L x 46.75" W (83.2 cm x 118.7 cm)
Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) was born in Germany, near Dusseldorf; however, he grew up in the United States. In his twenties he returned to Germany to study at the reputable Dusseldorf Academy. In addition to this school's tradition of heroic painting, the Hudson River School tradition would greatly impact the young Bierstadt who would go on to be best known for his grand paintings of the American West. Depicting the breathtaking beauty of such awe-inspiring locales as the Rocky Mountains and Yosemite Valley, Bierstadt's art also reflected the notion of Manifest Destiny in support of westward expansion.
The original painting "Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie" is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art (accession number 76.79). As noted on their website, "In 1863, Albert Bierstadt made an arduous expedition to Colorado in order to gather studies of the region for this monumental painting, executed three years later in his New York studio. For the final canvas, he exercised artistic license-rearranging some landmarks and exaggerating the scale of others-to maximize the visual interest of this Rocky Mountain landscape. The picture toured the country on a yearlong exhibition and thrilled audiences with its dual effects of sublime grandeur and reportorial detail. Soaring peaks, expansive valleys, and turbulent weather conditions create a dramatic backdrop for the meticulously detailed flora and a Native American hunting scene in the foreground. Mt. Rosalie (now Mt. Evans) appears in spotlight within a ring of dark clouds in the upper left corner of the composition. Bierstadt established his artistic reputation with 'Great Pictures' of the American West that embodied the national agenda of expansionism known as Manifest Destiny."
Of note: According to the Brooklyn Museum of Art, "The painting had a personal significance, for 'Mt. Rosalie' (now Mount Evans) was named by the artist in honor of his traveling companion's wife, Rosalie Osborne Ludlow, whom Bierstadt would marry in 1866 following her divorce."
