[Civil War - Manuscripts] US
[Civil War - Manuscripts] US Civil War Un-conventional Stylings of Dixie 1861 2pp 7.75\'\' x 10\'\'. Dated June 13 1861 titled Dixie Land and inked perpendicular to the text A Copy - Drawn off by - F. M. Bailey Sussex County Virginia. Countless versions of the lyrics to Dan Emmett\'s \'\'Dixie\'\' were written following the song\'s initial popularity in the minstrel shows of the 1850s. The first page of this particular transcription contains commonly seen verses relating to military camp life that were popular among Civil War soldiers (Pork and cabbage in da pot; / It goes in cold and comes out hot;) but the verses on the second page are unusual. An internet and auction records search turned up the lyrics A nigger up in a great big tree; / Lookin right strate down at me; and A nigger in a bushel measure; / Was tickl\'d to death by swallowin\' a feather; in only two sources: a Civil War-era song sheet published by Baltimore bookseller Louis Bonsal and a transcription in the Civil War diary of a soldier of the 7th U.S. Infantry. The man who penned the document offered here could be Pvt. Francis M. Bailey who mustered into the 33rd Virginia Infantry 12 days before it was written and is listed by HDS as having deserted on December 19 of the same year. Condition: Spotting edge wear and some chipping/separation at the lower edge. Text is clear and legible.

Theodore "Fonville" Winans
Theodore "Fonville" Winans (American/Louisiana 1911-1992) "Dixie Belles" silver gelatin print signed and dated "1938" on ink lower left 20 in. x 24 in. Note: The image of two young women dressed in their Sunday clothes staring at the camera with intensity has become an iconic example of Fonville photography. The 1938 image depicts Fonville's familiarity with capturing the various expressions on the faces of native Louisianians. Although the mood greatly differs from the jovial expression on the face of the oyster shucker in The Oysterman or the rough nature of Pierre Lombas in Native Shrimpman the similarities between these three famed images are displayed through Fonville's ability to see into his sitter's emotional state of mind and capture it through the camera.
