- 19TH-20TH C. EUROPEAN STERLING FORKS
19TH-20TH C. EUROPEAN STERLING FORKS & SPOONS (7)Featured in this lot is a collection of various decorative sterling forks and spoons from Europe circa 1800-1900s. The collection includes four forks and three spoons. The first spoon was made in Birmingham, England for Halifax Rifles in Canada circa 1932. Halifax, Nova Scotia, is home to the Canadian militia group known as the Halifax Rifles. The Halifax Volunteer Battalion of Rifles—officially known as the Halifax Rifles—was established on October 8, 1860. It was created in response to the rising hostilities between the United States and Britain at the time, as well as the potential threat of American annexation of British North American territories. During the Fenian Raids, a series of incursions by the Irish-American nationalist organization Fenian Brotherhood into Canadian territory, the Halifax Rifles took part in defending Canada. Both 1866 and 1870 saw these raids. The Halifax Rifles participated in World War I actively, like many other Canadian military units. They dispatched troops to fight in the Western Front and other European theaters with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The unit's contributions to this war were recognized with several battle honors. The Halifax Rifles continued to serve as a militia unit during the interwar years, providing neighborhood defense and emergency training. During this time, the unit underwent a number of reorganizations and modifications. The Halifax Rifles continued to serve as a militia unit after World War II, taking part in training drills and assisting civil authorities in times of need and during natural disasters. Additionally, the unit has participated in a number of international peacekeeping operations. Today, the Halifax Rifles remain an active militia unit, contributing to the Canadian Armed Forces' reserve component. The spoon shows a highly decorated handle reading, "Halifax Rifles / Cede Nullis (Yield To None) / Canada 63". The bottom of the bowl shows British stampings and makers mark reading "L & S" for L. Spiers, the Birmingham town mark, the lion passant indicating the quality of silver and the letter "O" for the date it was made (1932). The spoon shows good condition overall with a patina from its antique age, but no signs of obvious damage are present. The spoon measures 5 1/16" L x 1" W x 1/4" H. The second spoon was made in Brussels, Belgium circa late 1870-1900. The spoon is stamped on the back but is illegible. The handle is highly decorated and shows a small sculpture of a man at the top of the handle. Below the sculpture it reads, "Bruxelles", showing it was made in Brussels, Belgium. The spoon shows a patina from its antique age but no signs of obvious damage are present. The spoon measures 4 7/8" L x 1" W x 1/4" H. The third spoon features a sterling construction and shows detailed decorations of a crane and a family crest in the bowl of the spoon. The bowl of the spoon shows a family crest with "Hage" inscribed underneath it. The neck shows a partial twist with the crane sitting at the top. The spoon shows good condition overall with some wear from its antique age and use over the years but no obvious signs of damage are present. The spoon measures 4 11/16" L x 1" W x 1/4" H. The first fork in this collection is a thin, two prong fork with a highly decorated handle and neck. The top of the handle shows a windmill facing the viewer head on, with intricate designs below it. The back of the neck is marked, "8305". The fork shows some slight wear and a light patina from use and its antique age, but no signs of obvious damage are present. The fork measures 4 1/2" L x 11/16" W. The second is a simple, three prong sterling fork with a cut handle. The back of the neck features stampings reading, "Sterling N & H". The fork shows some slight wear from its antique age and warm patina to the sterling but no signs of obvious damage is present. The fork measures 4 11/16" L x 11/16" W. The third fork in this collection shows a simple three prong design with a souvenir fork style handle showing a painted windmill in blue coloring against a white background. The spoon shows no markings. The fork shows good condition overall with no signs of obvious damage present. The fork measures 5 1/8" L x 7/8" W. The final fork in this collection is constructed of sterling silver and shows intricate designs through the neck and handle. The top of the handle shows a detailed windmill made of sterling. The wings of the windmill spin freely when moved. The neck of the fork shows high detail in its designs, while the back shows a makers hallmark reading "HH" and other unidentifiable stampings. The fork shows good condition overall with slight wear from its age and use through the years. No obvious signs of damage are noted. The fork measures 5 1/8" L x 13/16" W. The collective weight of these items is 99.9 grams.
- DON BALKE (B. 1933) "FOX SQUIRREL"Don
DON BALKE (B. 1933) "FOX SQUIRREL"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Fox Squirrel and Live Oak" Signed lower center. Original Watercolor on Paper laid on Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This art was originally published in the limited edition collection of philatelic proofcards issued by Fleetwood and the National Audubon Society for the Wildlife of the 50 States.
Scrambling, twisting and finally falling on all fours, the Fox Squirrel cavorts in the massive branches of Georgia's strong state tree, the Live Oak. As the largest North American squirrel, this black ball of fur is clumsy. However, as if to atone for his awkwardness, the Fox Squirrel is friendly and much more charming than his graceful relatives. These friendly fellows entertain people by playing with pine cones and paper balls, turning somersaults in grassy meadows, holding climbing drills on tree branches and chasing each other through Georgia's magnificent oak groves. These humorous activities are accompanied by loud scoldings, noisy whistling and the rapid chatter through which Fox Squirrels communicate with each other. Like their smaller relatives, the Georgia squirrels instinctively twitch their bushy tails. Noting this nervous habit as a characteristic of the squirrel species, the Greeks named these friendly rodents squirrel, which means shadow tail. During the midwinter mating season the twitching tail is especially evident as the males busily preen and fluff. When finished, they curl their bushy, well-groomed tails over their smooth backs and begin to court the female Fox Squirrels. About forty-five days later, two to four young are born, each weighing only two-thirds of an ounce. In just ten weeks, the once tiny babies crack their own nuts, scold their friends and, like their parents, sleep away much of the lazy morning until the afternoon sun warms their sleek, black coats.

- 10 MAYA CHERT & OBSIDIAN POINTS, BLADES,
10 MAYA CHERT & OBSIDIAN POINTS, BLADES, DRILLPre-Columbian, Mexico to Guatemala, Maya and Toltec cultures, ca. 550 to 1200 CE. This is a fine collection of 10 stone projectile points, blades, and drill - all knapped from chert and obsidian. The largest is a flaked jet-black obsidian spear head, with basal notches that create pronounced ears and a petite stem - a very impressive and sizable blade, perhaps for ritualistic use. The drill bit or perforator has a long tapering bit with a thick base cross-section, and usually spent projectile points were turned into drills. The rest of the chert and obsidian points are bifacially knapped with sharp edges, fine pointed tips, and even petite serrations along the narrow gray blade. The stemmed heads may have been attached to wooden shafts, and the unstemmed pieces could be used as scrapers or other cutting blades. Size of largest obsidian point: 4.5" L x 2.75" W (11.4 cm x 7 cm); case: 12.25" L x 8.25" W (31.1 cm x 21 cm)

- CHINESE NEOLITHIC LIANGZHU STONE CONG
CHINESE NEOLITHIC LIANGZHU STONE CONG W/ ABSTRACT FACES...**First Time At Auction**
East Asia, China, Neolithic, Liangzhu culture, ca. 3300 to 2250 BCE. A stunning and finely-formed ritual funerary item known as a "cong," carved by hand from a creamy peach-hued hardstone with beige and light-grey inclusions. The cong bears a square form, a circular opening drilled through the center, and four projecting corners with sharply-grooved contours. Each of the exterior corners boasts a pair of incised abstract faces, one with minimalist eyes and a broad headband filled with intricate curvilinear motifs, and another with enormous egg-shaped eye panels filled with similarly-intricate motifs. This cong was formed through a meticulous carving and smoothing process using awls, drills, and abrasives of varying fineness, and boasts an incredibly smooth surface which is pleasing to the touch. Stone items like this one formed part of the decoration of these tombs and seem to have been reserved for the most elite people in society, and clearly had great significance, but meaning and purpose of congs remains a mystery. Size: 3.5" W x 2.6" H (8.9 cm x 6.6 cm)
Cong-tubes, with their distinct square cross-section and a hole in the center often combined with spiritual emblems of animal and human masks at the corners as in this example, are a hallmark of Liangzhu culture. Despite the lack of a conclusive theory as to how both the form and design were derived, there is no dispute that the cong-tube occupies an important place in the study of Liangzhu Culture. Congs that are shorter in height and are more elaborately carved, like this example, are frequently from an earlier date, while larger pieces of simpler design were generally created later. The funerary function of congs like this example probably had a religious connotation. Some scholars of Chinese Neolithic history and anthropology posit that the cong is "based on the ancient Chinese notion that earth was square and heaven round, while the hole in the object represents the passage connecting heaven and earth." (Weichao, Yu. "A Journey into China's Antiquity - Volume 1: Paleolithic Age - Spring and Autumn Period." National Museum of Chinese History, Beijing, China, 1997, p. 80)

- EXHIBITED / PUBLISHED EGYPTIAN PREDYNASTIC
EXHIBITED / PUBLISHED EGYPTIAN PREDYNASTIC NAQADA I BRE...Ancient Egypt, Predynastic Period, Naqada I to II, ca. 3650 to 3200 BCE. A stunning jar of tall and slender form that is hand-carved from breccia exhibiting mottled red and cream hues. The piriform vessel stands upon a smooth base and features 2 pairs of drilled lug handles, each set with diagonal grooves between them suggesting a rest for a carrying strap. The exterior has been polished to be generally smooth, but the interior surface gives a better understanding of the rough material that the artisans had to work. Size: 4.5" W x 7.4" H (11.4 cm x 18.8 cm)
In addition to being quite striking, this jar represents a technological leap forward for the ancient Egyptians. In the early Pre-Dynastic period, artisans hollowed out hard stone vessels using hand-held stone borers and abrasive desert sand. Then, during the Naqada II period, the invention of copper tubes used to drill very hard stones (in conjunction with sand as an abrasive), allowed people to drill finer forms - like, for example, these lug handles. However, copper drills only allowed artisans to drill cylindrical items, and so the hollowing out of bulbous vessels like this one still required use of an elongated stone borer in the form of a figure-eight to get under the shoulder. Imagine the hours of work that went into making this single jar!
