- PUBLISHED EGYPTIAN NEW KINGDOM LIMESTONE
PUBLISHED EGYPTIAN NEW KINGDOM LIMESTONE USHABTIAncient Egypt, New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, ca. 1292 to 1189 BCE. A gorgeous ushabti figure carved by hand from gray-white limestone exhibiting a slender form. The figure presents standing in mummiform with fused legs atop protruding feet while crossing both arms atop her chest. A pair of hoes painted in black extends from her hands, signifying her duty to tend the fields of Osiris in the afterlife, and a black seed bag is painted behind her right shoulder. Additional red pigment creates stripes bangles that adorn each wrist, the 'beaded' ornamentation of her elaborate wesekh broad collar, and the profile of her plump lips. Her haunting yet serene countenance stares outwards with almond-shaped eyes while slender brows and large, almost Hathoric ears further define her appearance, all framed within the thick lappets of her sizable wig. One can only imagine how intricate and colorful this artifact was when first created, and her beauty has endured through the millennia. Size: 2.6" W x 7.7" H (6.6 cm x 19.6 cm); 8.6" H (21.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Ushabti were first introduced in the Middle Kingdom as substitutes for the mummy in case it was destroyed. During the Second Intermediate Period inscribed wooden figures called shawabtis (after the Egyptian word for wood, shawab) began to be placed in tombs. During the New Kingdom, ushabti assumed a new role as servant figures for the deceased. They were now depicted with agricultural equipment. By the Third Intermediate Period, the number of shabti placed in the tomb was set at 401 (365 workers and 36 overseers). During the Late Period the tomb figures became known as ushabtis ('answerers'), these figures represented servants who would magically answer when called upon to perform agricultural duties for the Pharaoh (in the form of Osiris) in the afterlife. Their main function was to ensure the individual's comfort and freedom from daily labor in the next life.

- EXHIBITED TAINO WOOD ZEMI COHOBA STAND,
EXHIBITED TAINO WOOD ZEMI COHOBA STAND, C-14 TESTEDPre-Columbian, Hispaniola, Greater Antilles Islands, Taino/ Arawak Indians, ca. 15th to early 16th century CE. Incredible! An exemplary wood zemi figure that served as both a vehicle and a symbol of Taino hallucinogenic transformation. A ceremonial stand for a vegetal entheogen known as cohoba - traces of which still present! Perhaps intended to represent the effects of cohoba, the figure is emaciated with a prominent arched spine as though fasting and displays a drug-induced countenance of gritting teeth and huge, open eyes, as if swelling with tears from the process of inhalation. He squats atop an annular plinth with hands on knees, which flank his erect phallus. His sizable ears are pierced with annular drill holes, perhaps for suspending lavish ornaments of plumage and seashells, while a discoid platter balances on his head, acting as a surface on which ground up hallucinogenic powder or paste would have been inhaled by ceremonial participants. Size: 7.5" W x 17.9" H (19 cm x 45.5 cm)
Hand-carved from guayacan wood, the figure was once inlaid with shell or gold leaf, as indicated in the variations in color around the mouth.
Taino art is comprised of many cult objects associated with the worship of "zemis." The term zemi refers to deities, ancestors, or earth spirits. Zemis like this example are believed to be inhabited by powerful spirits. Owners of zemi figures traditionally honored them with offerings of food or precious gifts. Each Zemi had its own identity and name, personality, distinct characteristics, and powers.
This piece was exhibited in the Museum of Native American History in Bentonville, Arkansas from February 1st, 2017 to 2019 as part of the "Coming to America - The Taino" exhibit. Additionally, the piece was published in "The creative genius of the first Americans – Bentonville’s Museum of Native American History houses world-class collection" by Jenny Boulden in Arkansas Living Magazine on March 1, 2017, "Essex Collection of Fine Taino Artifacts Now on Exhibit at MOHAH" by Jill Rohrbach on Arkansas the Natural State's website in February 2017, and "The Creativity of the Taino People" by Vanessa Schmitz-Grucker in La Gazette Drouot on June 30th, 2022.

- 2ND C. GANDHARAN BUDDHIST ALIGRAPHIC
2ND C. GANDHARAN BUDDHIST ALIGRAPHIC STONE (FROM STELE)...**Originally Listed At $1200**
Central Asia, Pakistan / Afghanistan, Gandhara, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A very rare section of a stone stele incised with a Gandharan Buddhist written script, framed with a wonderfully detailed floral and geometric border. This piece was most likely from the base of a Buddhist shrine. Gandhara's visual culture displayed a rich blend of East and West- in 330 BCE Alexander the Great conquered the region; Greek culture would influence Gandharan art for the following seven centuries. During this period, over 60 languages were used in Gandhara, however preserved script is a rarity and what has been discovered has yet to be fully deciphered! Some of the better-known ancient Gandhara writing systems include, Pushkarasari, Brahmi, and Kharosthi. Researchers have presented strong evidence of the origins and relationships of these scripts to other languages at the time. Ties to Semetic languages such as Aramaic and Greek, as well as the use of some Chinese characters all demonstrate the cross-cultural connections! Size: 15.125" L x 1.5" W x 3" H (38.4 cm x 3.8 cm x 7.6 cm)
