DRUMMER BOY OF SHILOH AUTOGRAPHED
DRUMMER BOY OF SHILOH AUTOGRAPHED LETTERALS from John L. Clem on Grand Army of the Republic letterhead, listing him as part of the Committee on Legislation. Dated February 15, 1926, the letter from The Drummer Boy of Shiloh thanks an unidentified Doctor for a "sweet valentines" sent to Cem and his wife. As the legend of Johnny Shiloh, popularized by a Civil War song by William Hays, overtook the facts, the child who served as a drummer boy for the 22nd Michigan at the Battle of Chickamauga become an inspiration for Union Soldiers.Promoted to Segeant as the youngest soldier to ever be a noncomissioned officer in the United States Army he was recognized for his part in the battle. He was later captured by Confederate calvarymen then released in a prisoner exchange. After beingwounded in war twice he was discharged at the ripe old age of 13. Included are the letter and an associated envelope with a cancellation mark from Newark Ohio 1933, printed "Welcome G. A. R. to 'City of Mounds' " for the 67th Annual Encampment, Home of Major General John L. Clem.. Letter approx. 8" x 11", envelope 6-1/2" x 3-5/8". Letter has been foldd to fit into envelope, small loss to the lower edge and lower right side. minor folds or wrinkles, overall toning of the paper. Envelope has shipping info en cut along upper edge, one area of loss to the left side, overall toning, discoloration from glue on flap. See images for more details on condition.
