Alexander John Drysdale
Alexander John Drysdale (American/New Orleans 1870-1934) "Dawn Along the Bayou" 1909 oil on canvas signed and dated lower right 18 in. x 30 in. in a giltwood frame. Note: From 1903 to 1920 Alexander John Drysdale maintained a studio at 504 Magazine St. New Orleans. Often seen sketching and painting in City Park Drysdale specialized in the depiction of the atmospheric Louisiana landscape. While much of his work fits several compositional formulas he sometimes painted other scenes such as the Mississippi Gulf Coast Tunica Hills along the Mississippi and the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. The landscape offered here depicts the tall pine trees found on the north shore and seems to show the edge of the lake or a tributary meeting the lake. The sky is luminous against the dark but accurately depicted lush vegetation. The fence line on the left side of the composition intimates the edge of a pasture. This highly refined and developed work is rare within the artist's vast output. Interestingly it is painted in 1909 the same year Drysdale won the gold medal for best oil painting from the Art Association of New Orleans.
