H. Grosclaude/Fleurier, Switzerland/Eight Days Running/Ind.p.t. Full & Quarter Seconds/40 Fine Ruby Jewels/Ben Roach to T. P. Leathers", the white enamel dial consisting of two small symmetrical dual time dials, a "diablotine" (quarter second) register and the outer ring for the independent sweep second, the gold hour and minute hands each set with a rose-cut diamond, the Swiss movement a two-train key-wind and key-set, eight-day, with forty jewels and twenty-four lignes, the frosted gilt-brass bar lever escapement with bi-metallic balance, works unsigned, case dia. 66 mm (excluding pendant and bow), with the original leather fob. Provenance: By descent in the Leathers family. Thomas Paul Leathers (1816-1896) was one of the most legendary Mississippi River steamboat captains of the Mark Twain era and owned or commanded eight paddle wheelers named "Natchez". His sixth "Natchez" raced the "Robert E. Lee" from New Orleans to St. Louis in 1870, setting an all-time river speed record and drawing worldwide interest. This race, along with the book Life on the Mississippi by Leathers' contemporary Mark Twain, did more to enhance the mystique of the great river than anything before or since. His astonishing 1,500-word obituary in the June 28, 1896 edition of the "New York Times" rivaled Twain's. The tribute honored Leathers as "one of the most remarkable men of the South who knew every president since Lincoln and who has never failed when in Washington to visit the White House, his card never being sent back. It was but the sarcasm of fate that the old gentleman escaped such perils of a steamboatman's life as fires, sinkings and boiler explosions, only to meet his death in New Orleans at the hands of a hit-and-run bicyclist." Leathers' admiration of Native Americans, particularly the Natchez Indians after whom he named his boats, inspired the decor of the racing "Natchez"; two of the Indian-motif clerestory windows were sold in these salerooms in May 2006. The "Ben Roach" who presented this watch to Leathers was almost certainly Benjamin Roach (1812-1896), a wealthy merchant and planter in Carrollton, Carroll County Mississippi.
