Charles Philippe King of France DsS Lot of 2 DsS plus an envelope with seal. Manuscript document 1p with translation. N.d. n.p. stated. This is a request from the Count Fois de Douhet de Sourzac for a pension for his years of service. He indicates that because of that service he has has to sell of much of his property and purchase his own equipment for the service. Now he finds himself without an appointment (and without any income). Along the side in the King's hand is a statement (translated) that he wants someone to look into this request in which he is interested and signed Charles Philippe. Second document is partially printed 1p Wimbourg 10 July 1799. Signed Charles Philippe. Appointment to the Royal Order of St. Louis. Condition: Toning to both. manuscript letter has tape reinforcement on verso along right edge; minor scuffing and short margin tears on left edge. Printed document with edge foxing overall toning old folds.

Guillaume-Mathieu Dumas French
Guillaume-Mathieu Dumas French General DS 1810 Partially printed DS from General Mathieu Dumas (1753-1837) with "Head of State" (Chef de l'Etat) crossed out and Councillor d'etat written in. Armee de Republique Francaise printed at top. Mathieu Dumas was born to a noble family and joined the French army in 1773. He came to America during the Revolutionary War as aide-de-camp to Rochambeau. During the French Revolution he had to flee a couple times but eventually returned and was elected to the Council of Ancients. He again had to flee until Napoleon Bonaparte became First Consul in 1799 and returned to organize the army. He helped with administration of the army under Louis XVIII but at first did not offer his expertise to Napoleon when he returned from Elba although later he helped to organize the National Guard. When Louis was restored Dumas retired and spent his final years writing although failing vision shortened his writing career. Condition: Light toning and scattered foxing. Overall in very good condition.

CHARLES MAURIN (1856-1914, FRANCE) PORTRAIT OFMademoiselle Sacha Richepin, pencil drawing on paper. Unsigned, numbered on verso 116. Part of a study for a larger painting titled "La Serotherapie", 1895, in the collection of Lyon Musee des Hospices Civils. 7" x 5 1/2". Unframed. Glued onto paper in corners, shows some residue, not laid down. Yellowed. Maurin was a graduate of Ecole des Beaux-Artes, Paris and the Academie Julian. He showed widely at salons in the 1880s and 1890s, was closely associated with Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoir, Felix Vallotton, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Maurin is credited with having invented the "spritzethnik", the use of an atomizer to spray pigment onto the paper to create atmospheric watercolor landscapes of "great beauty". He is closely associated with the Parisian avant-garde movement, and with realist and symbolist movements. Maurin's work is held in the collections of the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Museum of Modern Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, and others. Provenance: from the collection of Henry Laurent, a close patron of the artist, Charles Maurin. Henry Laurent acquired over 1,000 works by Maurin at the urging of Edgar Degas who considered Maurin the most important French painter since Ingres. The collection was passed to Henry's son, Charles, and subsequently by descent, to his daughter, Danielle Francis (nee Laurent) of Marion, MA.

The title Dauphin or roughly viewed as the ''Son of France'' was carried by the heir apparent to the French throne. Louis Dauphin of France (1729-1795 was the only surviving son of Louis XV and Queen Marie Leszczynska. Although he died before ascending to the throne three of his sons became King Louis XVI Louis XVIII and Charles X.CONDITION: Label is chipped; small hole along front joint near foot.

Diane Corisande de Andoins Mistress of Henri IV DS Diane d'Andoins (1554-1621) who preferred to be called Corisande (and was usually referred to as La Belle Corisande) apparently from a fictional romantic figure became the mistress of Henri of Navarre who became Henri IV the first Bourbon king of France. DS 2pp 9 x 12.5 in. 1606. Signed Corisane Demdoyns. Diane was accused of trying to get Henry to repudicate his wife Marguerite (who was the youngest daughter of Catherine d'Medici) so she could become his legitimate spouse. Marguerite for her part attempted to poison Henry then shot at him (and missed). During the Renaissance mistresses could have real power and reportedly Diane did. They could appoint ministers make laws etc. Condition: Light even toning surface soil and scuffing along edges. A few pencil notations by later cataloguers. Mounted on light cardstock docketing on last page visible.
