18TH CENTURY PAIR OF DUELING
18TH CENTURY PAIR OF DUELING PISTOLS BY ROBERT WOGDON 11 3/16" barrels 15 ¾" overall length Dueling by modern standards is considered by most to be primitive. However, turn the clock back in European History, and the function becomes apparent. Family name and reputation was essential to business success, not so today where second chances are prevalent. Scandal in the 18th century could lead to being disowned. Dueling became a way to settle any insult to a families honor, especially mistreatment of the gentler sex. A brace of dueling pistols was as essential as proper attire for a gentleman. As the sword gave way to the firearm, there was an increasing demand for these specialized weapons. A trade Mr. Wogdon found interest and pursued. There is little known about Robert Wogdon, most facts are a interpolation of whatever records can be found. Purported to have been born in 1737, he would be apprenticed in 1748 to Edward Newton, a skilled smith in his own right. Mr. Wogdon appears in records to be in the employ of a haberdasher in 1764, which was typical for the period. Wogdon pistols developed a reputation for extreme accuracy. The process or machinery he used is not known, but what he performed to achieve accuracy is understood. Unlike other smith's, the flats of his barrels were parallel to the centerline of the pistol's bore. Although his pistols had open sights, at ranges for a duel, it was only necessary to point and shoot off the end of the barrel. Unlike his
contemporaries, there work was more dependent upon sights. Wogdon entered into a partnership in 1794. After which both names appear on the pistols. This set was made before
that date, a true pair of 18th century duelers. The name on the pistols, "William Morris, Perth",
was either purchased by his father before they left for Canada, or inscribed after secondhand purchase. Mr. Morris joined the local Canadian militia during the war of 1812. Later in life he would rise to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He would serve in many government positions, work on a canal project as well as being pertinent in establishing Queen's College. His use for the pistols is unknown. It appears Mr. Wogdon left the trade around 1803 and retired. He died in 1813.
