An American Classical Mahogany Card Table early 19th c. attributed to Duncan Phyfe New York scalloped foldover top bookmatched frieze with central tablet on tapered reeded legs ending in brass paw feet height 29 1/4 in. width 36 in. depth 17 3/4 in. Note: The tablet skirt reeded legs and paw feet on this example are very similar to those on a "five legged card table" by Duncan Phyfe once in the Castles collection. Notably the table offered here has a lobed top more sophisticated than the Castles example. Reference: McClelland. Duncan Phyfe and the English Regency 1795-1830. p. 157 pl. 138.

An American Classical Carved Mahogany Card Table c. 1820 attributed to Duncan Phyfe New York crossbanded foldover swivel top with rounded corners conforming skirt tapered molded supports arched trestle base blocked feet flat stretcher casters height 30 1/2 in. width 36 in. depth 18 in. Note: Retaining original marbled paper interior. Note: The rounded corners and blocked and molded skirt and saw cut corner construction on this table are very similar to elements on several important New York games tables one exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1998 another descended in a New York family discovered by antiquarian David Petrovsky and attributed to Duncan Phyfe. The distinctive supports and trestle base on this table are nearly identical to those in a library table also attributed to Duncan Phyfe illustrated in Stuart Feld. Of the Newest Fashion Masterpieces of American Neo-Classical Decorative Arts. pp. 64-65 cat. 33. Reference: Kenny et. al. Duncan Phyfe breakfast table, finely figured mahogany with mahogany, pine and birch(?) secondary, base with four finely carved turned posts, on four hairy paw feet with well carved claws, acanthus carved knees, original iron plates supporting legs, New York, probably the shop of Duncan Phyfe, 1815-1820, 29 x 39 x 24 in., opens to 46 in. Lacking original brass casters, one replaced toe, old refinishing, minor surface chips and abrasions, one corner with old repaired separation, one leaf support replaced. Note: The bowed block embellishments on the trestle base of this table are nearly identical to those on a cheval mirror descended in the Manning family (Milford Plantation South Carolina) attributed to Duncan Phyfe. The table offered here has laminated and saw cut layers at the turned corners of the skirt a detail of fine craftsmanship seen in a card table attributed to Phyfe and descended in a New York family recently discovered by antiquarian David Petrovsky. A Rare American Classical Inlaid
A Rare American Classical Inlaid Satinwood Astragal End Work Table c. 1815 attributed to Duncan Phyfe New York hinged lid enclosing an interior fitted with a writing panel looking glass and two demilune trays; the frieze faced as a drawer tambour door below reeded urn standard saber legs with waterleaf carving brass paw feet casters height 31 in. width 25 in. depth 12 1/2 in. Note: This rare example is part of a very small group of satinwood work tables related to the Phyfe workshop. Others include a table purchased from Phyfe in 1813 by Victor du Pont for his niece Victorine du Pont Bauduy for her marriage and now conserved by the Hagley Museum and Library Wilmington Delaware. A second table is conserved by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 1986.84.2). The table offered here is nearly identical to the Met example and shares dimensions and case details with the du Pont example. Reference: Kenny Brown Bretter and Thurlow. Note: The use of finely figured veneers and columnar supports with a sophisticated conforming medial stretcher on this table can also be seen on a games table attributed to Phyfe illustrated in Feld. The distinctive spreading pilaster-form moldings atop the trestle base seen here recall those on a console table labeled by Phyfe and descended in the family of his daughter Eliza.
