French Empire mahogany bureau a cylindre by Jean-Joseph Chapuis circa 1810 rectangular black marble top above long drawer atop cylinder roll concealing fitted interior with writing surface and small drawers above an arrangement of three over two drawers; all resting on square tapered legs with block feet. H49 3/8'' W55 1/8'' D25 1/4'' Provenance: Atlanta Georgia collection. Literature: Ledoux-Lebard Denise. LE MOBILIER FRANCAIS DU XIXe SIECLE DICTIONAIRE DES EBENISTES ET MENUISIERS 1795-1889. Paris: Editions De L'Amateur 2000. pp.118-21. Other Notes: The stamp CHAPUIS was used by two Parisian ebenistes Jean-Joseph Chapuis (1765-1864) and Claude Chapuis (active 1797-1818). The overall style and proportions of the legs indicate that this design was by Jean-Joseph Chapuis. Refinished marble in very good condition with minor edge flakes felt writing surface is missing minor shrinkage cracks few brass trim pieces missing other imperfections consistent with age.
